The 1.3-inch OLED display is another strength of the Skagen Falster 3. While the screen isn’t quite as large as another smartwatches, especially with its noticeable bezel and thick inner lip, it’s notably crisp and bright.

Touch-wise, the display is responsive, and it’s often easier to swipe with a finger through the interface (like sorting through the extensive list of workouts) instead of spinning the crown and accidentally pressing its ‘back’ button.

In keeping with the watch’s designer focus, the fourteen included watch faces are stylized to a fault, with several veering into silly (one is simply a hoop of the phrase “ITS ABOUT TIME” with each letter such as an analog number position from 1 to 12). But they’re nearly all dark faces with light markings, which is seemingly a battery-saving feature.

Skagen Falster 3: Wear OS

Google’s Wear OS once again runs the show, which means you’re getting software we’d still describe as being good in some places and not so good in others, ultimately making it a hard operating system to get on with.

You’re getting pretty much everything Wear OS has to offer at least including Google Pay, which is very easy to set up and is the most useful feature. Music controls are still well implemented too. Notification support is good, but still feels a bit clunky and we’ll get into what we think of Google Fit in the section below (spoiler: it’s not very good).

It’s now been brought in line with other Fossil Gen 5 watches adding a speaker, which now means you can take calls from your wrist on iPhones and Android phones. There’s no LTE connectivity here, so you’ll need to have your phone nearby.

In terms of speaker quality, it’s good but nothing groundbreaking. If you want to be calling from the wrist then it does work – but we’d still prefer to reach for our phone.

That onboard speaker also means you can listen to music out loud (if you really want to be that person) and hear responses when using Google Assistant.

Using it for the latter is more useful than the former, though the success rate of Google’s smart assistant picking up a slightly more challenging question still disappoints. Keep it simple and it’s absolutely fine most of the time.

Skagen once again makes its presence felt in the watch face department and does the fine job of extending that stylish, minimalist look to those digital faces. For the faces that show off widgets and complications, it’s done in a really subtle and complimentary way. These are some of the nicest branded watch faces you can find on a Wear watch.

What really shines through though here is that Wear OS runs better and smoother than before. Skagen has upgraded to the latest Snapdragon Wear 3100 processor alongside 1GB RAM and 8GB of storage for your apps and music. The performance jump is really noticeable one. There’s no laggy screen moments and it’s the kind of boost it dearly needed.

Competition: No need to sacrifice function for style

Michael Kors Sofie Heart Rate Wristwatch: This beautiful smartwatch from Michael Kors also runs on Wear OS, provides snappy feedback, and will make your wrist feel stunning. It’s a little more expensive than the Falster 2, and it’s a lot chunkier on those with smaller wrists, but we think it’s a great alternative smartwatch.

Fossil Gen 5 Smartwatch: Skagen is owned by Fossil, so it should come as no surprise that the Gen 5 smartwatch looks almost exactly like the Falster 2. It retails for $295, like the Falster 2, but it comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 processor that outshines the Falster 2’s 2100 processor. The Gen 5 offers everything you could ever ask for in a smartwatch, from swim tracking to remote payment, and it comes wrapped up in a gorgeous metallic package.

Apple Watch Series 4: If you own an iPhone, then the Apple Watch Series 4 is undeniably the best smartwatch you can get in the same price range. It comes with the robust App Store, packs in the most features of any smartwatch, and looks beautiful. Granted, it very much looks like a smartwatch, but it’s easy to customize the straps with the ubiquitous first-party and third-party straps. The Series 4 also introduces an FDA-approved ECG, a bigger and clearer screen, 18 hours of battery life, and a louder speaker. It will set you back by $399 or more, but it’s the clear choice for those who need maximum health or productivity assistance.

Final Verdict

A beautiful smartwatch with plenty of features, but it’s starting to show its age.

The Skagen Falster 2 is a very beautiful, capable smartwatch. With all the essential features, from NFC to waterproofing and a voice assistant, the Falster 2 makes it easy to stay connected at the pool and at the executive meeting. It’s lamentable that it runs on an aging Snapdragon 2100 Wear processor, but for those willing to give up a little speed for fashion, the Falster 2 is a great choice.

The Skagen Falster Gen 6 comes equipped with the ‘Wellness’ app. That app may seem familiar if you’ve used Fossil’s watches. What is interesting, however, is that the ‘Wellness’ app doesn’t have a version for your phone. Instead, Skagen expects you to connect it to Google Fit. That is what most people will prefer anyway, as that is the hub most Wear OS users use either way. In any case, this app will track your steps, workouts, sleep, and SpO2. Considering this is Google Fit we’re talking about, most of you are probably familiar with how it goes. The Skagen Falster Gen 6 is not exactly a fitness-y watch, but it can serve as your fitness companion, without a problem. Oh, and yes, GPS is included here, and the watch is 3 ATM rated, so it’s basically swim proof.

Our Verdict

The device has great looks and basic Wear OS functionality, which is suitable for many. It has a great speed of operation and a bright, colorful screen. On the other side, its price is a bit too much for rather limited functionality.

It doesn’t have set up tutorials, so using it for the first time might be a challenge. To add, button navigation might be confusing at times, which is not particularly good if you are a first-time Wear OS user. Also, the smartwatch doesn’t have automatic workout detection, which is in many other fitness-aimed tracking devices.

Battery Life

Battery life is definitely the Achilles’ heel of smartwatches with most lucky to last you through the day. Skagen claims you can get up to 24 hours of battery life with the Falster Smartwatch and they’re not far off. During testing with everything set to defaults — screen auto-off, screen brightness set to auto, all notifications set — there were a few days that I started with 100% at 7 a.m. and ended with near 50% battery life left, and never lower than 20% around 11 p.m. There were a few days when I was able to go from 7 or 8 a.m. until noon the next day and still have a bit of juice left, hitting more than the 24 hour mark, but for the most part I got in the habit of charging the watch each night while I slept.

When the watch is completely drained, it took about 3 hours to fully recharge. During testing, I was also able to get about 20% of a charge in half-an-hour of midday charging.The watch stays in place on the charger by way of magnets.

While it’s not a multi-day battery life, you can definitely push it to the 24-hour mark and it should definitely get you through most days without having to recharge it before you head to bed.

Design

There’s no question we’ve been pretty big fans of Skagen’s Connected hybrid-smartwatch series and their minimal design. The first entrant from Skagen as a full-blown smartwatch, the Falster Smartwatch, is no exception. Being a full-on smartwatch, the case is a bit thicker than its hybrid counterparts and comes in at 12mm. Still, when worn, it’s not that thick and still looks pretty stylish. In the case of our review unit, the case is silver with the crown (and only button) located on the usual right side of the watch. Just below the crown is a small hole for the microphone. On the top and bottom of the case are narrow, cylindrical lugs — also silver in colour.The Skagen Falster Smartwach keeps with the Skagen minimal design school.

While the case is 1 5/8″ in diameter, the actual screen size is just over 1 1/8″ in size. On the outer edge of the casing is a shiny black-ish bezel roughly 1/8″ thick. Depending on what watch face you choose to use, the bezel ties in nicely and offsets the silver case and lugs.

Finally, the watch strap is a medium brown leather with a silver buckle and two leather straps for holding any excess strap while on your wrist. The straps connect to the lugs using a quick release system for easier removal or replacement.

The leather watch straps can be easily replaced with the quick release system.

The Skagen Falster Smartwatch charges wirelessly and the wireless charger consists of a USB cable with a small disc attached to the end of it. The disc attaches to the watch magnetically, although it’s not strong enough to hold the watch and more meant to keep the watch in place while sitting on a counter or bedside table.The charger.

As mentioned, our review unit was the silver/brown leather variation, you can also get a black/black leather, rose gold/steel-mesh, or silver/steel-mesh variety.

Display

Unfortunately, Skagen hasn’t released what the ppi of their OLED display screen is but given the size, it’s crisp and clear. The auto-brightness works well for various lighting conditions. The screen can get nice and bright, and the colours are rich and as expected. Most importantly, the touchscreen is nice and responsive and I didn’t have any issues reading what was on the screen or having it respond to swipes or taps.

The display is crisp and clear.

In addition, Skagen has provided a number of custom watch faces which are in line with the minimal look of their hybrid and regular watches. My personal favourite was the Anidigi face but there is also an Analog, World Time, Digital, Weather, or Health along with a Google Fit Analog and Google Fit Digital watch face. Of course, running on Wear OS, there are plenty of compatible watch faces available from the Google Play store.A sample of Skagen’s minimal watch faces which fit nicely with the physical watch design.

One issue I did have though, was that I couldn’t get the temperature to display in degrees Celsius through the watch faces. At the end of the day, I didn’t use it as one of the customizable components of the face but rather just ended up asking the watch what the weather was whenever I wanted to know.

Design – The Skagen Falster 3 is the best-looking Wear OS watch to date

I’m glad that we get to address the Falster 3’s design right off the bat because it is, by far, my favourite aspect of Skagen’s timepiece. While there are several styles available, we were sent the gunmetal option for review, with a 42mm body comprised of stainless steel and a complementing 22mm watch strap utilising stainless steel mesh. With so much metal on board, the Falster 3 sounds like it could be a heavy timepiece, but I found it to be less so than, say, a traditional men’s analogue watch.

In fact, I was initially concerned about the breathability of the whole thing, particularly when wearing the watch out on a run or down the gym. Luckily, Skagen’s novel idea of having two handlebars in place to distance the connecting watch strap from the smartwatch itself means that plenty of air can pass through, preventing the device from sticking to my wrist.

The handlebars also do a great job of framing the watch itself, drawing your eye to its design. It’s a slight shame then that despite its stellar design upfront, the Falster 3 takes a few steps back where the buckle is concerned.

Now, there’s no denying that the safety mesh buckle on the Falster 3 does follow the same minimalist aesthetic as the rest of the watch, but that continuity doesn’t account for much when, in practice, the buckle proves to be incredibly fiddly in the early days of use.

Even once you become familiar with its design, the buckle never eases up in its difficult resizing process. There are no prongs, loops or magnets in play, so you can’t simply readjust the size of the Falster 3’s watch strap on the fly. No, this requires at least one tool and accompanying military precision.

Trying to readjust the Falster 3’s watch strap to fit my wrist took no less than four attempts before I found a length that was comfortable, but the whole process left me feeling desperate for a Milanese loop.

Skagen Falster 3: Design and luxury

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it and that’s largely the case with Falster 3 on the looks front. You’re still getting a completely round stainless-steel case along with your choice of leather or a metallic mesh strap.
On the face of it things don’t look to own changed all that much, but the case size has grown. Skagen has moved from a 40mm case to a bigger 42mm one, which suggests it loses a number of the daintiness that gave the Falster 2 more unisex appeal.

Let’s put that in context though. A 42mm case continues to be smaller than most smartwatches, and we’d certainly still recommend for those with smaller wrists.

The Skagen Falster 3 could be a gorgeous smartwatch. The round, stainless-steel, 42mm case contains a satisfying heft thereto, but at 11mm thick it manages to not be too chunky. The slim, tubular lugs hook up with a variety of matching bands; i’ve got the steel mesh band, but there are silicone and leather options. there is a rotating crown on the correct, with two shortcut buttons flanking it.

When I first tried the Skagen Falster 3 on, i used to be impressed by the standard feel and appearance, which carries through to the wonderful array of Skagen watch faces. Spending longer with it’s not dulled that first impression, and it is a smartwatch that has drawn admiring glances and compliments from friends and family. The OLED screen is 1.3 inches across, and it’s sharp, bright, and alert to touches.

I think the Skagen Falster 3 works better in a very casual or work setting than it does at the gym, especially with the steel mesh band. My daily driver is sometimes the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2, but i’ll switch to the Skagen for social gatherings or work meetings because i like the way it’s.

Battery life – A huge improvement where it counts

One of the biggest improvements brought about by the Fossil Gen 5 was noticeably better battery performance. This was due to the implementation of several battery modes, and the ability to customise those modes to suit your lifestyle. This same update has been carried over to the Falster 3, making the Wear OS experience better than it’s ever been.

By default, the watch is set to Custom mode, which makes use of some of the watch’s main features such as NFC, location tracking and an always-on screen. It switches off the more audacious aspects, such as constant voice detection and phone audio. On a typical day with Custom mode switched on, receiving a handful of notifications and tracking a single workout, I was able to end the day with 53% still left in the tank – plenty, if you want to continue wearing the watch for sleep tracking.

However, switching over to Extended mode can get you even more mileage for your money. Over a 10-hour period, with minimal notifications, the battery dropped to only 82% from a full charge. The following day was mostly spent in a cinema (don’t judge), so do-not-disturb was switched on to avoid notifications, seeing only a slight dip to 59% after nearly 14 hours. It isn’t the best way to make the most of the Falster 3’s features, but it’s nice to know that its battery life can go above and beyond when you need it to.

The only major point to note is that, if you’re looking for a smartwatch that can go the distance and match your pace during a marathon, the Falster 3 isn’t it. A quick 26-minute run with untethered GPS took 16% off a full charge. On heavier days that included longer runs, the battery would drop to just under 50% by the time lunch came around. For a proper marathon companion, you’d be better off with the Garmin Venu or the Garmin Vivoactive 4.
