The most vital selling point of the Spectre x360 16 is undoubtedly its 16-inch 3840 x 2400 (3K+) UHD OLED display (there is also a 3K+ WLED version on the more affordable models). The screen packs an impressive 91% screen-to-body ratio with flush glass, and it has an anti-reflective layer that cuts down on screen glare. You get a punchy wall of a screen that’s quite immersive on your laptop.
But besides the specs, HP packs this display full of almost everything. There are sensors for auto-brightness and adaptive color, with the latter adjusting the color temperature based on your current ambient lighting.
HP has its Display Control software that auto sets color profiles, e.g., Web (sRGB), Photos and Video (DCI-P3), Default, and Native, based on the currently running application. Hop into Photoshop, and your screen is auto-set for DCI-P3. Launch Microsoft Edge, and you’re now in sRGB. On the desktop? You’re currently viewing Native. All of this is user-configurable and is simply ingenious.
And those color profiles are stellar. In our color gamut test, the Spectre x360 16 delivered a nearly perfect 100% sRGB, 96% AdobeRGB, and 100% DCI-P3, making this a picture-perfect screen for creatives who work in media. Brightness dips down to a decent 22 nits (which may be too bright in a pitch-black room) and peaks at 385 nits. That peak brightness is on the lower side for some laptops today, but it looks more brilliant than those numbers reveal due to the OLED technology. There were no issues with visibility in brightly lit rooms or even outdoors.

Users can enable Focus Mode to save battery life, diming background items while keeping your current application illuminated. It can be distracting when the screen dims, but besides extending your battery usage, you’re likely preserving the OLED display.
Of course, on top of all that, this is a touch display that also supports inking. HP includes the pen in the box and, like other HP pens, does an excellent job for those who need to markup a document, do a sketch, or take notes.
Overall, the Spectre x360 16 delivers one of the most impressive displays for any Windows laptop in 2022.
AMOLED: You Can’t Unsee It
This Spectre x360 15’s most eye-catching feature is, without doubt, its AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) display. It is state-of-the art by any standard with its 4K/UHD (3,840-by-2,160-pixel) resolution and 10-point touch support.
The AMOLED technology is what truly sets this Spectre apart. Unlike traditional notebook screens or desktop monitors that use a backlighting unit, the pixels on this display are their own lighting sources. Black on the display looks like the display is turned off in those areas because indeed it is, at least for those pixels showing black. That characteristic is what gives this display an infinite contrast ratio.
It’s also super bright and colorful. HP rates it for a dazzling 400 nits and 100 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 color space that is used by cinema companies. Users of color-sensitive apps, such as Photoshop, will find the HP Display Control app useful for switching color spaces, including sRGB and Adobe RGB.
One display improvement on this 2020 model is an anti-glare treatment for the Corning Gorilla Glass surface, but it’s not matte-surfaced like a TV. It still looks reflective (it is glass, after all), but the I-see-myself mirror effect that plagues most glass-surfaced screens is much reduced. The coating also does a better job of resisting fingerprints.
For artists and scribblers, the display has a passive digitizer that supports MPP 2.0 styli. Customizable models on HP’s website include one; strangely, my review model does not. But my model isn’t devoid of freebies; it includes a carry sleeve to keep the laptop protected in a backpack or case.
Wrap up
Overall, I couldn’t be more pleased with this laptop. It certainly is a fantastic mix of portability, versatility and power. I don’t get to say this often, but they also did a good job improving the minor issues with the Spectre x360 of last year. HP took a great machine and made it even better. Thinking back to all the 13-inchers I’ve seen in the past, there really isn’t one I could currently recommend over this one – especially considering the price.
I think the only thing I can legitimately ding them on is removing the pen support. I have a feeling there will be a number of people upgrading their current model and blindly expecting to have this feature. I hope HP will consider bringing it back in future models. I guess I can also ding them on the keycaps. They really need to be black! Hopefully HP is listening.
The main highlight of the machine for me is the small footprint and overall size. This is an area that puts this machine in direct competition with the XPS 13. In some ways they are both about equal, but when you consider the extra speakers, the ability to flip the screen around, a FHD Windows Hello webcam and the extra wide trackpad, I think I can give Spectre x360 a significant edge. I’ve had both and if I had $1300 to spend, I’d go with HP no questions asked.
There are however a few convertibles you could also consider, like the Lenovo Yoga 910, Asus Zenbook Flip S and Samsung Notebook Pro 9.

Our Take
HP accomplished something special with the Spectre x360 15. It’s not an inexpensive machine, but it’s nevertheless a no-compromise option that will leave you convinced that you’ve made a great investment. In all its aspects, from performance to battery life to utility, the Spectre x360 15’s whole is more than just the sum of its parts. Admittedly, it makes for a very large 2-in-1 device, but if that bothers you, then just buy it because it’s an excellent notebook and ignore the fact the screen flips around.
Is there a better alternative?
Finding a machine in its distinct class — that is, 15.6-inch 2-in-1s — is a challenge. At least, finding ones that are as high-quality and offer the same value is difficult. The closest match is the Lenovo Yoga 720 15, which offers a quad-core seventh-generation Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 2GB GPU for a similar $1,500. We found it to be a compelling option for someone looking for better gaming chops in a 2-in-1 machine, but it still fell behind the Spectre x360 15 in our estimation based on a mediocre display and more modest battery life.
At the same time, the Spectre x360 also competes against higher-end notebooks like the new Dell XPS 15. While Dell’s machine has a seventh-generation quad-core Intel Core i7 processor option and Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050 GPU, and thus offers higher performance, it’s also significantly more expensive at $2,150 with similar RAM and storage. That’s $500 more than the Spectre x360 15, so if you don’t need the XPS 15’s workstation-level performance, you can save some money with the HP and gain occasional 2-in-1 functionality.
Finally, the Spectre x360 15 also competes against Microsoft’s Surface Book 2, as both are 15-inch, 2-in-1s with active pens. The Surface Book 2’s “clipboard” tablet component is much lighter and more comfortable to carry around than the Spectre x360 15 in tablet mode. Pen support is similar between the two, as is performance, and so if your tablet use doesn’t require carrying it around in one hand, then the Spectre x360 15 is an interesting alternative — and it offers a $1,300 savings over the equivalent Surface Book 2. On the other hand, the Surface Book 2 has incredible battery life that really blows competitors like the x360 15 out of the water.
How long will it last?
With its latest refresh, the Spectre x360 15 uses an eighth-generation Intel Core i7 processor, includes a USB-C port with Thunderbolt 3, and supports Windows Hello and an active pen. Those are some of the latest and most relevant current technologies, and they should keep the machine cruising along for a good while. The 1TB SSD option means you’ll be able to store tons of apps and files, and so that component should last for some time as well. The Nvidia GeForce MX150 is also a newer GPU, and although it’s still an entry-level option it’s the latest entry-level option available.
Should you buy it?
If you’re looking at the HP Spectre x360 15, then chances are you’re interested in a machine with a larger display. You’re also probably looking for a traditional notebook first and a 2-in-1 second — otherwise, you’d likely be looking at something smaller. If this describes you, then the Spectre x360 15 is a great choice. It’s not a workstation, nor a solid tablet, but it does deliver an excellent laptop experience at a more reasonable price than its entirely unaffordable peers.

Ультрабук отлично собран, нигде не скрипит. По размеру и весу он сравним с MacBook Pro 2016. Приятно, что и по качеству не уступает. Металлический корпус имеет более бархатистую текстуру, чем у MacBook, в результате меньше заляпывается и пачкается, а оттирается значительно легче.
Итого: дизайн MacBook проверен временем, но слишком привычен. Если вам хочется, чтобы ваш ультрабук удивлял, притягивал взгляды, то HP Spectre x360 подходит больше.
Keyboard and trackpad
Two things that didn’t need to improve over last year’s model were the keyboard and trackpad. HP pretty much left the keyboard the same, which is a good thing. I was able to adapt and type on it pretty quickly and there’s little or nothing I can complain about. The key layout is very logical and very well sized. The only keys that are small are the up and down arrows – typical for 13-inchers.
The actual keystroke is a little shallow, measuring 1.25mm with my calipers. I also measured the weight required to actuate a keystroke and got 62 grams. Sure the keystroke is shallow, but it’s actually really good for such a thin design. It didn’t affect me much anyways, because when I took a typing test, I scored 54wpm right off the bat(my average is roughly 50).
The only thing they changed was a column of keys on the right hand side. This added dedicated home, pgup, pgdn and end keys. By consequence, it allowed the bottom row to spread out a little, making the Alt keys a little wider. I’m splitting hairs here, but I think I would have rather had it the way it was before, mainly because I find myself off center when typing sometimes. My left palm is so close to the edge of the palmrest that it just doesn’t seem right. In fact, the first couple times I typed on this machine, I was actually off to the right by a key for many of my keystrokes. It was a simple adjustment to fix though, so again, splitting hairs.
The keyboard is also backlit and comes with only a single level of brightness – on and off. Like last year, you won’t want the backlighting on during the day because it further reduces the already bad contrast on the keycaps. One good thing is when you turn off the backlighting, every key light turns off, including that F5 key. On the last model, that key was always on and it was super annoying to look at while watching a movie.
For the most part, having only the one level of backlighting is pretty acceptable. I do with there was a level between off and on though. One thing that I can easily notice is some of the keys are significantly brighter than others. It’s not ugly and certainly not a deal breaker but those keys in particular(P, [, W) seem too bright to me.
Probably my only valid complaint about the keyboard is the contrast of the keys. It’s starting to become a pet peeve of mine and I wish manufacturers would start paying more attention to this. Silver keycaps on a silver chassis, with grey lettering and white backlight is NOT a good thing. It’s not so bad in evenly lit rooms, but if you’re outside or next to a window, the sunlight really makes it difficult to see the keys. Backlighting only makes it worse too. The only solution is having keycaps with some contrast, such as black.
The trackpad is also something that stayed the same, which is also a good thing. Actually I take it back, it changed a little. HP shaved off a little on the trackpad width, making it 120mm wide now. The height is the same at 60mm. Yes it’s a little smaller than before but it’s still wider than almost every other trackpad out there. To me, this is an improvement because I’m even less likely to accidentally hit the trackpad now, while typing.
The surface of the trackpad is glass, so it’s very smooth to touch and use. Gestures registered perfectly for me and I had no problems with tracking the mouse pointer. I typically do single and double taps, not clicking, but both worked perfectly fine for me. The right click is actually a little far over, if you’re used to traditional trackpads, so you’ll probably want to convert to double tap on this one.
It’s a Synaptics brand touchpad so the three finger swipe gestures are programmed for app switching only. The two finger scrolling is very smooth on both Chrome and Edge. Pinch to zoom works pretty well but the trackpad is a little short so it’s not always the easiest to do. Overall, I’m very impressed with the trackpad.

Noise, Heat, Connectivity, Speakers and others
Heat dissipation is somewhat decent, considering how thin the laptop is and the fact that the vent on the bottom isn’t in line with the components that need to be cooled. I did notice some thermal throttling though, especially in benchmarks, so there’s definitely some room for improvement.
I originally thought the thermal throttling might be caused by the rubber feet being so short and blocking the intake beneath. I mean, I can’t even slide a piece of paper underneath the laptop, so I don’t see how that bottom vent is doing anything at all. Turns out, it probably isn’t doing anything, but it doesn’t matter – even with the laptop in tent mode, my benchmarks still yielded the same temperature results.
The fans appear to draw air across the laptop completely, which seems to get the job done. If I had to guess though, the CPU gets the warmer air from the GPU and that’s why the thermal throttling occurs. Another heat pipe on the CPU would probably have done the trick.
As far as external temps are concerned, the fans do their job to remove enough heat to keep the casing from getting overly hot. Under normal usage, I barely noticed any change in comfort on my lap. I did notice it getting a little warm with games, but it really wasn’t too bad. See below for my results.

The fans on this unit were mostly off under light loads. When they did kick on, it would only be temporary and they would shut off at the right time. In most scenarios, I never noticed the fans cycling on and off, but keep in mind that I live in Florida and I usually have air conditioning running, so it’s hard to notice unless I’m paying close attention.
While gaming, the fans are definitely noticeable, but it’s not as bad as many other units I’ve tested. I did take some readings at ear level, which you can see below:
- Ambient noise in the room: 30 dB;
- Light use with lowest fan speeds 35 dB;
- Heavy Gaming: 48 dB;
Radios – This unit comes with an Intel 8265 wireless AC WiFi module. The module doubles as a Bluetooth adapter, offering Bluetooth 4.2 capability. The coverage is actually excellent, as I experienced no drops in connection during my use. 25ft from my router, I maxed out my internet connection at 90Mbps. From 100ft, the speed tapered off to 80Mbps, however that is still a solid performance from my experience.
Speakers – This HP Spectre x360 has two upwards facing speakers, which come through the grills on both sides of the keyboard. The speakers are plenty loud, reaching 80dB. I did detect a little distortion at the highest settings, but it wasn’t too bad.
Overall I’m OK with the sound, but the bass is a little lacking. With a sound test, the bass levels were only detectable as low as 90Hz, so you can imagine how tinny the sound could get.
Webcam– A FHD webcam is included on this unit, which also doubles as a Windows Hello cam. It’s centered at the top along with the infrared blaster, so it’s pretty much aimed right at your head during normal use. After initial setup, the Windows Hello feature worked quickly and flawlessly every time.
The image quality of the webcam itself was very good in my opinion. The low light quality is also pretty decent, and better than much of the competition out there. There’s not a lot I would change about this part of the laptop.

Внешний вид и характеристики
По скромной картонной коробке сложно догадаться о высоком статусе устройства. Помимо самого ноутбука с блоком питания, в комплекте присутствует чехол, а также стилус, очень напоминающий шариковую ручку.
Ноутбук обладает топовыми характеристиками — процессором Intel Core i7 8550U (1.80 ГГц) и оперативной памятью DDR4-2400 объёмом 16 Гб. Вместительный SSD-диск (1 Тб) позволяет быстро переносить большие объёмы данных с внешних носителей, оперативно загружать графические приложения и в целом забыть, что такое «тормозящий» компьютер. Помимо этого, устройство оснащено акустикой от известного высококлассного производителя Bang&Olufsen.
Дизайн
Мобильность и внешний вид — это то, за что в первую очередь ценят ноутбук. Тонкий и лёгкий, примерно 2 см толщиной и чуть больше двух килограммов, лэптоп не производит впечатление графического монстра. Матовая серо-графитовая поверхность крышки с блестящими медными вставками логотипа, петель монитора и торцами корпуса скорее намекает, что это устройство для показа высокого положения владельца. В некоторых ситуациях это очень нужное качество.
В открытом виде ноутбук также производит серьёзное впечатление. Большой тачпад размером в треть ширины корпуса обрамлён тонкой блестящей медной рамкой.

HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15 не просто ноутбук, он трансформер. Это значит, что экран можно развернуть на 360 градусов и использовать в качестве планшета. Учитывая, что экран сенсорный, это удобно.
Вес 2 кг для планшетного компьютера — это много. Но в определённых случаях планшетное положение ноутбука предпочтительнее. И не только в работе, а, например, при просмотре фильмов или игр.
Интерфейсы подключения
HP Spectre x360 15 неприятно удивил недружелюбностью по отношению к периферийным устройствам. Разъём USB 3.0 Type-A всего один. То есть к ноутбуку можно подключить либо внешний HDD, либо флешку, либо проводную мышь. Это кажется серьёзным недостатком, придётся использовать разветвитель. Разъём расположен на левом торце корпуса, между кнопкой включения и разъёмом подключения блока питания.
Там же, слева на корпусе, есть кард-ридер SD/SDHC/SDXC и отверстие разъёма мини-джек для наушников.
На правом торце ноутбука присутствуют ещё три разъёма: полноразмерный HDMI и два USB Type-C, один из которых поддерживает интерфейс Thunderbolt 3.
Что подключить по HDMI, кроме монитора, придумать проблематично. Но возможность подключения внешнего большого дисплея полезна и наверняка будет востребована многими. А вот два USB Type-C, даже при поддержке Thunderbolt 3, вряд ли будут задействованы одновременно, тем более вместе с HDMI.
Управление и настройки
Полноразмерная клавиатура HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15 с плавным ходом клавиш делает работу с ноутбуком не менее комфортной, чем с десктопом. Работать с большим тачпадом приятно, а сенсорный экран добавляет ещё больше удобства. Но для полноценной работы с графикой всё же необходима мышь.
У клавиш есть подсветка. В темноте это удобно, днём же её можно отключить. Настроек яркости и датчика освещённости подсветка клавиатуры не имеет.
Производитель добавил в комплектацию сенсорное перо. Неужели HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15 — это мечта художника-иллюстратора?! Увы. Рисовать или использовать его в ретуши сложно. Стилус имеет чувствительность к нажатию, но степеней нажатия, по ощущениям, очень мало. Точка приложения пера при движении заметно отстаёт от острия. Работать с ним нужно не спеша. Для чего же стилус нужен? Пожалуй, только для набросков или рукописных заметок.
