The Flip form factor of the Asus VivoBook Flip 14 puts the screen at the center of this device. However, the screen often fails to impress. It’s a Full HD panel, making it pretty crisp for the 14-inch size. My issue with the panel was more with the color. It only covers 45% of the NTSC color gamut, making it rather dull for a laptop that has great media consumption promise.

What’s even worse here is that the display only hits 250 nits of brightness. I didn’t face any issues with the brightness and gloss while indoors. However, this device has some serious limitations when it comes to outdoor use.

The glossy glass combined with poor brightness levels meant that this laptop was barely usable outdoors, even when the weather was rather cloudy.

Coming to the touchscreen and stylus experience, it was acceptable. The touch accuracy is solid, and the bundled Asus Pen is a pleasure to use. Windows 10 still isn’t great with touch, and the in-built tablet mode doesn’t do any favors for usability. The Asus Pen comes with a nifty tiny sleeve with a magnet, which you can use to attach the pen to the metal lid of the laptop. While I’m not a touchscreen user when I’m on a laptop, I particularly enjoyed this attachment solution from Asus. It almost made me want to use the pen more.

Performance

The VivoBook Flip 14 equipped the first six-core Ryzen 5 5500U CPU that we’ve tested, and I was looking forward to seeing how it compares to Intel’s various Tiger Lake variants and the Ryzen 7 line. I came away impressed.

It didn’t dominate in Geekbench 5, with the lower single-core score and more competitive multi-core result typical of AMD chips. It came in third in the comparison group, behind the Asus ZenBook 13 UM325UA with an eight-core Ryzen 7 5800U that dominated and the MSI Prestige 14 Evo with its quad-core Intel Core i7-1185G7. In PCMark 10, the VivoBook Flip 14 came in second behind the ZenBook 13, and it scored particularly well in the Content Creation portion of that test. According to these results, the Ryzen 5 5500U is competitive with Intel’s Core i7 and much faster than the Core i5.

In two particularly CPU-intensive apps, Handbrake and Cinebench R23, the VivoBook Flip 14 was particularly impressive. In the Handbrake test that encodes a 420MB video as H.265, the Asus was 31 seconds faster than the Prestige 14 Evo and only seven seconds behind the ZenBook 13. The results were similar in the demanding Cinebench R23 test where, at least in multicore mode, the VivoBook Flip 14 came in a close second to the ZenBook 13 and was significantly faster than the Prestige 14 Evo. And the Ryzen 5 5500U is a real step up from the previous generation, making the VivoBook Flip 14 an impressive budget performer.

As with all the recent Ryzen laptops we’ve reviewed, the VivoBook Flip 14 excels at CPU-intensive tasks and will churn through the typical productivity workflow. It can tackle creative applications as well, although its Radeon Graphics won’t offer much in the way of boosting applications that can utilize the GPU. That’s also true of Intel’s Iris Xe integrated graphics, of course. In this comparison group, only the HP Envy 14 with its Nvidia GeForce GTX-1650 Ti will bring real value to those applications. Everywhere else, the VivoBook Flip 14 will perform exceptionally well, especially given its $630 price.

One area that won’t impress is gaming. The 3DMark Time Spy test result isn’t anything to write home about, and the VivoBook Flip 14 was a weak performer in Fortnite. It managed just 25 frames per second (fps) at 1080p and medium graphics, in line with laptops equipped with Intel Iris Xe graphics. It hit 15 fps in epic graphics, again equivalent to Intel’s integrated GPU. Simply put, the VivoBook Flip 14 isn’t a gaming laptop at any price.

Тестирование

Начнём с прогона популярных графических тестов 3DMark. Само собой для этого подключим ноутбук к сети и выберем режим максимальной производительности в утилите MyAsus.

Результаты у IRIS Xᵉ MAX, как и ожидалось, заметно выше, чем у простой интегрированной графики Iris Xe Graphics G7. Разница набранных в 3DMark баллов составляет около 25%, что достаточно существенно – сказываются повышенные частоты чипа и особенно выделенная собственная память в 4 ГБ с высокой пропускной способностью.

В комплексном бенчмарке PCMark 10 результат у VivoBook TP470E хороший, система достаточно отзывчивая из-за M.2 накопителя и 8-поточного процессора.

В синтетике CINEBENCH R20/R23 процессор Intel Core i5-1135G7 максимально приблизился к старшей версии i5-1165G7 по производительности на ядро, а при многоядерной нагрузке даже слегка опередил табличное значение.

В тесте рендеринга Corona 1.3 время чуть лучше, чем у лэптопов с интегрированной Iris Xe Graphics — 4,5 минуты. Результат стандартного бенчмарка WinRar также не самый высокий.

Для игровых тестов используем родное разрешение дисплея 1920х1080p и сравним FPS при разных настройках и разных режимах производительности ноутбука в MyAsus.

Результаты для бюджетного ноутбука очень приятные – заслуга дискретного решения IRIS Xᵉ MAX. При средних и низких настройках относительно комфортные FPS>30 были получены для HUNT, PUBG, Ведьмака 3 – а это достаточно требовательные проекты. Более простые графически игры вроде WoT спокойно показывают порядка 50-60 FPS при высоких настройках. Таким образом остаётся заключить, что VivoBook TP470E вполне способен при определённых оговорках взять на себя и роль игрового ноутбука (если устроят средне-низкие настройки).

При этом разница при переключении режимов производительности ноутбука не такая большая, как у большинства моделей: FPS в автономном стандартном режиме снижается всего на 10%, а в тихом – на 30%.

Ноутбук-трансформер ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 TM420 оснащён чипом AMD Ryzen

Компания ASUS анонсировала портативный компьютер VivoBook Flip 14 TM420, получивший трансформируемую конструкцию: в основу новинки положена аппаратная платформа AMD.

Ноутбук наделён 14-дюймовым сенсорным дисплеем формата Full HD (1920 × 1080 точек). Применена панель NanoEdge с узкими рамками: экран занимает 82 % площади поверхности крышки. Дисплей можно вращать на 360 градусов, переводя устройство в планшетный режим работы. Возможно управление при помощи специального пера.

В зависимости от модификации используется процессор Ryzen 7 4700U, Ryzen 5 4500U или Ryzen 3 4300U. Объём оперативной памяти DDR4-3200 составляет 8 или 16 Гбайт. За хранение данных отвечает твердотельный накопитель PCIe SSD вместимостью от 256 Гбайт до 1 Тбайт.

В арсенале портативного компьютера — адаптеры беспроводной связи Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) и Bluetooth 5.0, интерфейсы USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A, USB 2.0 и HDMI, слот microSD, опциональный дактилоскопический сканер.

Asus VivoBook Flip 14 (2021) review: The verdict

The Asus VivoBook Flip 14 is a premium-looking offering from Asus. As we have come to expect from Asus laptops, it performs quite well and looks the part. However, it has a few glaring issues that become harder to ignore the more you use it.

The chassis doesn’t feel cheap at first, but there are hints that it won’t hold up very well over time. The form factor promises great media consumption functionality, but the display fails to deliver. It’s barely usable outdoors — despite the fact that a laptop like this attracts folks that need a powerful laptop that can be used on the go.

The Asus VivoBook Flip 14 needs to offer a more well-rounded experience, and fix a few issues that hold back the otherwise great design.

Но, благодаря заострённым боковым сторонам смотрятся более стильно. Дизайн здесь действительно привлекательный – как у корпуса, так и у экрана с клавиатурой. Вес также распределён равномерно. А вот шарнир жёсткий, поэтому для поднятия крышки приходится прилагать усилия.

Расстояние между крышкой и корпусом слишком мало, отчего иногда приходится подцеплять ногтями. Как я уже упоминал, корпус сделан из пластика, хотя крышка – металлическая. Под клавиатурой, в области расположения правой ладони, наклеен стикер, который со временем отстанет, после чего на поверхности останется след. Из-за пластикового покрытия стереть этот след полностью не удастся.

Дисплей

ASUS VivoBook TP470E оснащён дисплеем диагональю 14” с IPS-матрицей FullHD 1920x1080p и заявленной яркостью в 250 нит. Поскольку экран имеет сенсорное управление, сверху есть покровное стекло, так что дисплей глянцевый и боится солнечных бликов. Камера разрешением HD и микрофоны встроены в верхней рамке.

Яркость у дисплея, конечно, откровенно небольшая: среднее значение едва дотягивает до заявленного – 247 Кд/м2. Этого будет достаточно только для работы в помещении.

Контрастность показала средние значения – 1295:1 ANSI.

С углами обзора у матрицы дела обстоят не очень хорошо. Заметно сильное падения яркости начиная с небольших углов отклонения точки зрения от нормали. Заметных искажений цвета при этом нет.

Однородность подсветки в порядке, судя по тестам DisplayCal, однако на тёмном и сером экране сверху хорошо заметны небольшие засветы вдоль края рамки.

Тест цветового охвата дал низкое значение 58,1% sRGB, что можно объяснить только одной из самых дешёвых матриц IPS. Понятно, что о работе с цветом и монтаже с таким охватом лучше не думать.

При этом расширенный тест правильности отображения оттенков дал вполне хорошие результаты с минимальными отклонениями от эталонов.

Кривая яркости дисплея немного круче эталонной, средняя гамма заметно ниже 2, примерно на уровне 1,85.

Баланс цветов на профиле по умолчанию при этом довольно точный, а цветовая температура совсем рядом с эталоном – в среднем около 6400 K.

A Slick, Compact Convertible

The construction and design of this laptop’s exterior are pleasing enough. The chassis is made of plastic, but it does not feel cheap, while remaining lightweight at 3.31 pounds. The paint is a nice black color with a hue that looks a bit dark-blue in a certain light; officially, it’s «Bespoke Black.» Black is, as always, slimming.

The lightweight design is underpinned by a compact footprint, measuring 0.72 by 12.8 by 8.7 inches (HWD). This combination makes the Flip plenty portable, easy to slip in a bag or carry under your arm to a meeting or between classes. Fitting a 14-inch screen into this size makes it a useful productivity machine once you get where you’re going. When you remember how inexpensive the laptop is, it’s a nice package overall. The IdeaPad Flex 5 14 is the same weight and a touch thicker, while the HP Envy x360 13 is a tad lighter at 2.9 pounds.

The physical shape is supported by some important design features, as well. One of these is the hinges, which allow you to fold this laptop’s screen all the way back into tablet mode, or stop at any point in between. It folds easily, and the hinges are secure. They may be a bit too tight, in fact, as this laptop does not pass the one-finger screen-lift test. You’ll have to hold the body down as you pull open the screen from the closed clamshell position, lest you lift the system off the desk.

The hybrid design adds a lot of versatility for different use cases, whether used as a tablet to draw or write more easily, held as a tablet in one hand as you move around, or set up with the keyboard facing down and screen pointed toward you for an airplane tray table or a demonstration. 

The other feature is also related to the hinge, but not the convertibility. Asus’ ErgoLift hinge is deployed here, which means the bottom of the lid lifts the keyboard deck off the desk as you open the screen. This creates a slight incline for the keyboard, resulting in a more comfortable typing angle and allowing air to flow better. The latter is more useful in heat-throwing gaming laptops, but the tilt does make typing feel a bit more natural.

How is the battery life?

This is where the Asus VivoBook Flip 14 impresses. My workload is rather light, and the Flip 14 managed to give me a battery life of between eight to 10 hours, consistently. This included a ton of open browser tabs in the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge, with a solid bit of Full HD video playback on YouTube going on from time to time.

Even when I tried to push the Flip 14, it still got very close to the eight-hour mark. Unless you’re doing some heavy work like video editing, the battery should last you for a full working day.

Even if your workload results in less-than-stellar battery life, fast charging should help make up for it. Asus promises a 60% charge from a “low battery” in 49 minutes. In my testing, the laptop went from under 10% to full in about an hour and 15 minutes.

The battery life and quick top-up certainly earn this laptop a few brownie points.

Asus VivoBook Flip 14 design

If you approached the VivoBook Flip 14 and said, “Hey, nice black suit!” It’d stick its nose up in the air and say, “It’s not ‘black.’ It’s bespoke black” in a stuffy British accent.

“Bespoke black” is the color of the VivoBook Flip 14’s elegant and urbane chassis, according to Asus, and it’s quite the trippy shade. In brighter environments, the VivoBook Flip 14 gives off a dark navy-blue hue, but in other conditions, the 2-in-1 emits an onyx tint. Whatever color it is, the VivoBook Flip 14’s smooth matte surface attracts too many fingerprints for my taste.

The words “Asus VivoBook” shines in lustrous, diamond-cut lettering on the center-right position of the aluminum-alloy chassis.

Open the lid and you’ll find more of that dark navy blue — er, I mean “bespoke black” —  throughout the deck. The Enter key immediately caught my eye as it’s framed inside a bright yellow-green trim. It’s a bit random and out of place, but I dig the splash of color disrupting that boring bespoke-black monotony.

The rest of the keys match the color of the chassis and feature large white characters that are easy on the eyes. Below the space bar, you’ll discover a small touchpad that sports a barely visible fingerprint reader on the top-right corner.

The screen’s side bezels are slim-ish, but the top bezel is slightly thicker to accommodate an HD webcam. The display features a large chin with the words “Asus Vivobook” emblazoned on its center.

Below the chin, you’ll find Asus’ sturdy 360-degree hinge, which allows the VivoBook Flip 14 to transform into a tablet. When you convert the tablet back into clamshell position, the ErgoLift hinge lifts the keyboard into a more comfortable typing angle. This angle also enables better cooling and sound quality.

At 3.3 pounds and 12.7 x 8.6 x 0.7 inches, the VivoBook Flip 14 is heavier and thicker than its competitors: the Acer Swift 3 (2.7 pounds, 0.63 inches thick) and the HP Envy x360 13 (3 pounds, 0.65 inches thick)

Обзор Asus Vivobook 14 Flip S: время автономной работы

Ноутбуки на базе процессоров AMD, такие как Asus Vivobook 14 Flip S, обычно являются лучшим выбором, если вам нужно сверхдлительное время автономной работы для продуктивной работы, но этот не входит в эту толпу. Asus Vivobook 14 Flip S также использует цилиндрический зарядный адаптер, а не более модный USB-C. Specs and features

Internally, you get an AMD Ryzen 3, 5 or 7 CPU — mine came with a 5500U — along with 8 GB RAM and up to 512 GB of SSD storage. I/O is generous for a device of this size and includes a 5 Gbps USB-A port, a 10 Gbps USB-C port, an HDMI 1.4, a 3.5 mm combo jack and a microSD card slot.

(I still don’t know why laptops offer a microSD card slot, or who uses one.)

The display is a 14-inch FHD unit and an OK choice in a laptop at this price. I measured an sRGB gamut coverage of a mere 56 percent, but an exceptional contrast ratio of 1400:1 at 120 nits. Max brightness is an acceptable 250 nits.

What this translates to is a great display for reading and writing and staring at graphs and charts, a passable display for streaming video on, and a recommendation to get an external monitor for editing photos and video. 250 nits is enough for indoor use, but in bright light or in the sun, it’ll be hard to work on that screen.

Процессор в максимальных краткосрочных пиках нагревается до 89° С, а в рабочем режиме при игровой нагрузке датчик показывает уровень всего около 70° С. Нагрев в целом немного меньше аналогичных моделей со старшими чипами. Троттлинг при этом крайне небольшой и встречается только в самых тяжёлых приложениях – например, в игре Hunt: Showdown он был порядка 20%, а в Ведьмаке 3 оказался и вовсе равен нулю за продолжительное время.

Нагрев SSD накопителя также не критичен: даже в максимумах при большой нагрузке температура не превысила 48° С, а в среднем составила около 42° С, что для M.2 хороший показатель.

Уровень шума у модели средний. Нельзя назвать его ни слишком шумным, ни тихим. Кроме разве что тихого режима – в нём ноутбук действительно почти не беспокоит, а главное, сохраняет неплохой уровень производительности. Без нагрузки система охлаждения работает уже совершенно бесшумно.

A Solid All-Rounder for Convertible Fans

The Asus VivoBook Flip is a good budget convertible with no major weak points. The build is compact and lightweight, it has a healthy selection of ports and a nice screen, and battery life is decent. The performance, in particular, is a strong suit, thanks to the Ryzen 7 chip, which tops the Ryzen 5 and Intel alternatives in machines around the same price. 

That said, those things don’t make it a great budget convertible. The build is solid enough on the exterior, but a little too flexible around the keyboard deck, and the keyboard is so-so. The battery life is merely okay, as well. These are the aspects that remind you this is an inexpensive laptop, but the same doesn’t apply to all machines in this tier. Compared to the designs of the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14 and the HP Envy x360 13 (2020), the Asus is not as impressive. It does get extra points for performance, but at the end of the day, the IdeaPad Flex 5 14 is a superior laptop overall for $100 less and retains its Editors’ Choice. Still, if you’re concerned with raw CPU performance above all, the VivoBook Flip 14 has plenty of charm inside its shell.

The Asus VivoBook Flip 14 does a lot right for a convertible laptop, delivering top performance in its price tier, but its build and feature set fall behind some less expensive alternatives.

Asus VivoBook Flip 14 performance and graphics

The Asus VivoBook Flip 14 is a performance beast!

Armed with an AMD Ryzen 7 4700U CPU and 8GB of RAM, the Asus VivoBook Flip 14 juggled 35 Google Chrome tabs (four of them played 1080p YouTube videos) as if it was the Hulk at a circus. I didn’t experience any lag when I opened a massive spreadsheet in Google Docs.

On the Geekbench 5 overall performance test, the VivoBook Flip 14 reached a jaw-dropping 5,294, which smoked the average mainstream laptop score (3,573). The VivoBook Flip 14 shouted “eat my dust!” to the Acer Swift 3 (4,862) and the HP Envy x360 13 (4,617) — both share the same CPU and RAM as their Asus rival.

On the HandBrake benchmark, the VivoBook Flip 14 transcoded a 4K video to 1080p in 10 minutes and 17 seconds, which is twice as fast as the category average (21:25). The Acer Swift 3 was about a minute slower (11:00). The HP Envy x360 13 hung its head in shame with its third-place time of 13 minutes and 44 seconds.

On our file-transfer test, the VivoBook’s 512GB SSD duplicated 4.97GB of multimedia files in just 10 seconds, which translates to a rate of 542 megabytes per second. That’s quicker than the category average (361.5 MBps) and the 512GB SSDs of the Acer Swift 3 (492.9 MBps) and the HP Envy x360 13 (339.9 MBps).

On the 3DMark Fire Strike graphics benchmark, the VivoBook’s integrated AMD Radeon Graphics sailed past the category average (1,983) with a score of 2,864. And once again, the VivoBook kicked its competitors’ butts — the Acer Swift 3 and HP Envy x360 13 (Radeon Graphics) produced scores of 2,847 and 2,569, respectively.

If you’re interested in how well the VivoBook Flip 14 handles light gaming, the Asus 2-in-1 achieved 31 frames per second on the Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Gathering Storm benchmark, which is double the rate of the average mainstream laptop (15 fps). The VivoBook Flip 14 also outpaced the Acer Swift 3 and HP Envy x360 13; both achieved 27 fps.

В ноутбуке Flip 14 VivoBook TP470E ASUS удалось сочетать набор интересных качеств. Позиционируется модель как универсальный компактный лэптоп, при этом одновременно с дискретной графикой IRIS Xᵉ MAX обладает очень доступной стоимостью и вдобавок форм-фактором трансформера с откидывающимся на 360° дисплеем. Сочетание уже само по себе привлекательное, особенно если ещё учесть сенсорный дисплей с поддержкой стилуса, наличие Thunderbolt 4 и нового интерфейса Wi-Fi 6.

Конечно, при таком соотношении функционала и цены на чём-то пришлось серьёзно сэкономить. У VivoBook TP470E достаточно посредственная матрица со слабым цветовым охватом – всего 58% sRGB, невысокая яркость (247 Кд/м2). Кроме того, клавиатура в данной конфигурации лишена подсветки, что не очень-то комфортно. Также стоит учитывать и нерасширяемый объём оперативной памяти с невысокой автономностью модели.

Основным достоинством ASUS Flip 14 VivoBook TP470E, на наш взгляд, является дискретная графика IRIS Xᵉ MAX в сочетании с современным энергоэффективным процессором Intel Core i5-1135G7. Это даёт модели начальный уровень игровой производительности и выгодно отличает её на фоне ноутбуков с интегрированными решениями при той же цене. Таким образом, VivoBook TP470E вполне можно рекомендовать, как универсальное недорогое решение, которое может проявить себя не только в рабочих повседневных задачах, но и отчасти в играх.
