Nest Wifi: Features and software
Like Samsung’s SmartThings mesh system, Nest Wifi is positioning itself as a smart home hub and router in one – a direction we’d like to see more routers take (fewer hubs = happier users). But Google’s offering also has a smart speaker built right in, so this is a three-in-one device.
This isn’t a smart home hub on par with SmartThings, but both the router and the points have a BLE radio so can act as a hub for Made For Google products such as Philips Hue and GE bulbs. Plus, you can cloud link a wide array of devices with Google Assistant.
Also, there’s that Thread radio, but it’s not switched on as of yet. “The Thread radio, which is a scalable smart home connectivity fabric that allows for robust routing and performance of IoT device, is not yet active,” Noronha told The Ambient. We will just have to wait and see what it will be used for (There seems to be a lot of waiting and seeing when it comes to Thread.)

From a purely WiFi standpoint, Nest Wifi offers traffic prioritization – which is a great feature few other systems offer (it is on the original Google Wifi). This means you can boost certain devices with the touch of a button, so if you’re watching 4K Netflix on a TV you can give it high priority. Nest Wifi also has some basic parental controls at no extra cost.
As mentioned, there’s no Wi-Fi 6 here. Google says this is due to price and need.
The guest network feature is well thought out, allowing you to easily share the password from the app or, if you have a Google Nest Hub, simply swipe down and select Wifi to display a QR code your guest can scan to connect.
Google Assistant gives you control over your network with voice from any compatible device (not just the Points), letting you pause and resume Wi-Fi on any groups you’ve created in the app and run speed tests.
Verdict
Our tests show that as a mesh Wi-Fi system, overall performance of the Nest Wifi Pro is good, but it’s not nearly as good as we’d expected.
There are a fair amount of security features thrown in, but you can’t configure a lot of the settings you might expect to be able to on a “Pro”-branded system.
Depending upon your reasons for buying a mesh Wi-Fi system, this could be forgivable, as could some of the other drawbacks. But more demanding users will find this limiting, frustrating, even. It’s possible that future firmware updates will improve on this, but that’s not a given.
What really sticks in the craw is the fact that the non-U.S. version restricts buyers to slower 5GHz speeds, for no apparent reason.
The Linksys Atlas 6 for example, supports 160MHz channels on the 5GHz band, and a 3-pack costs a lot less than what you’d be forking out for a Nest Wifi Pro 3-pack.
That said, the Nest WiFi Pro is considerably cheaper than most Wi-Fi 6E systems. The Asus ZenWiFi Pro ET12 3-pack, for example, costs over £1100 / $1000, while the Netgear Nighthawk RAXE500 router is priced around £500 / $500.
Wi-Fi 6E may still be new to most people, but the Nest Wifi Pro has too many drawbacks for us to even consider recommending it. In fact, you should really spend some time reading our roundup of the best mesh Wi-Fi systems to see what we do recommend.

Setting up Google WiFi
I was not looking forward to setting up the Wi-Fi. My experience getting things like routers set up in the past has been that it’s tedious, difficult, and often requires tech support.
I opened the box and right away marveled at the small card with set up instructions; just plug one of the Wi-Fi points into your modem with the ethernet cable, then use the Google Home app to connect. (The gen 1 WiFi used the dedicated Google WiFi app, though since the first generation you can also manage the Wi-Fi in the Google Home app.)
The next step is to name your network and assign it a password.
The Google Home app will likely prompt you again to set up additional pods if you’ve bought a two-pack or more.
The app walks you through where to place them (no more than two rooms away from the modem is recommended) and in a location where you can talk to it… since the new Wi-Fi pods are actually also Google Smart Speakers. (More on that in a sec!)
It’s easy… so easy
I can’t say enough how simple this set-up process was. The app made it absolutely foolproof, and the whole set-up went smoothly with absolutely no snags. I test a lot of gadgets and seamless easy set-up is one of the features I give high marks to. In this case, I have no doubt even a child could get this hooked up in minutes. There’s no IP addresses to worry about, no calls to the internet service provider and no confusing instructions. I had the whole network up and running in under 10 minutes; it took longer to go up and down stairs and plug them in than it did to set up.
Google Nest Wifi review: Price and warranty
Pricing is varied depending on what you want for your setup. If you want to simply get the Router unit, without Google Home smart speaker functionality and a range of 2,200 square feet, then that can be yours for $149.
Each smart speaker toting Point extender unit can be added at a cost of $149 each, which will add a further 1,600 square feet to your WiFi range. You can buy the Google Nest WiFi and one Nest Point for a discounted price of $269, saving you $50 against the standalone costs.
Or you can go for the full package deal and get the Google Nest WiFi Router with two Points, giving you a total range of 5,400 square feet, for $349, saving you $120 against the individual costs.

The Google Home Nest Wifi works out more expensive than the direct Amazon Eero competition, at $249 for a three pack. But then that doesn’t come with built-in speaker functionality like the Google system offers.
Google offers you a limited warranty that allows you a full refund if you are unhappy and return the product within 30 days. The warranty itself will run for a full two years from the date of delivery.
Nest Wifi: In use
So, does it work well? Yes and no. Voice control is often brilliant. Being able to pause my kids’ devices with a few words (and not have them be able to un-pause it, thanks to voice match) is a great use case. But we had some connectivity issues with laptops and phones in areas where our previous mesh Wi-Fi setup (Samsung’s SmartThings Wifi in a 3-pack system) was seamless.
It was definitely better than our pre-mesh lives however, but we think our home ideally needs a 3-pack system. While it’s only 2,400 square feet it has three levels and the app told us our Point had a weak mesh connection — even though it was only 20 feet and an open staircase away from the Router. We also noticed a small drop off in speed when connected to a Point compared to the Router.
There’s also no option for hardwired backhaul, as the Points don’t have Ethernet ports. This isn’t something everyone will need, and Google says the 4×4 radio in the Router provides added range to make sure the Points connect with the Router, and that traffic optimization algorithms from its data centers manage backhaul and client traffic on the radios.
The problem is algorithms may work for most situations, but the control algorithms take away from the user makes it hard to tailor this system to your home if you have a more unique situation. These aren’t flaws per se, as the system will most likely work well for you, but it’s just not as customizable as some might want.
Google Nest Wifi
This is the mesh WiFi for the rest of us, if you want deep dive control and super-duper power, this isn’t for you, but if you have a regular home with some connectivity issues in spots and a distaste for complicated setup — you’ll love this device. Plus, if you’re all in on a Google smart home, this just makes sense. The points are essentially Nest Minis and will extend your voice control in your home, plus that Thread radio in there may one day be useful. We were disappointed in the range, and the speeds were slower than our previous setup in some situations.

The Nest Wifi Pro has the usual features you’d expect from a mesh system, but not the advanced settings that the Pro name might suggest.
Their layout in the app isn’t intuitive, and it often takes a few seconds to open a simple page or sub menu, which is frustrating.
Through the Google Home app, you can do the basics like change the Wi-Fi password and SSID (network name), and get a quick overview of the devices that are connected to your home network.
From the Devices tab, you can pause traffic to specific devices, and prioritise traffic – but you can only prioritise traffic on one device at a time, and even then, prioritisation isn’t indefinite. You can opt for one device to be given the best possible Wi-Fi connection for up to eight hours at a time.
That might work if you only need the device to have a good connection for odd days where you might have some important Zoom meetings, but it’s hardly ideal if you, say, work from home permanently and don’t want the kids taking away bandwidth with Roblox and streaming when they get home from school unless you’ve remembered to re-set that prioritisation.
On the subject of Zoom meetings, tapping on the Settings cog in the main menu will see you able to access a ‘Preferred Activities’ sub menu, where you can select Video Conferencing as a preferred application. For now, the only other option is Gaming and, presumably, more options will be added over time.
You can also enable a guest Wi-Fi network (and give guests access to specific devices on the network) and there are basic parental controls with Google’s SafeSearch content filter.
There’s support for WPA3, although there’s no hybrid WPA2/WPA3 mode, so older devices might not connect if you turn that on. And you’ll find settings and support for UPnP, IPv6, plus some DNS options – you can use Google’s DNS (the default option), your ISP’s one, or enter custom DNS details.
There’s no option to run a VPN from the Nest Wifi Pro, and nor is there the option to open up a desktop control panel which has extra settings. Indeed, you’re not invited to create an admin password for the devices during set-up either, and you can’t configure a firewall.

Setup

Practically every router and mesh Wi-Fi device is now set up using a companion app to guide you through the process, and the Nest Wifi Pro is no different – except that it uses the Google Home app for this.
This is the same app that used to control your Nest Cam Indoor and Google Nest Audio smart speakers. If you’re invested in Google’s ecosystem, you’ll likely feel right at home and if you’re not, it could take some getting used to, because at first it’s not immediately obvious where everything is. (Previous Nest Cam owners are still disappointed with the app as the old Nest app was so much better.)
As for the setup process itself, it’s utterly simple. Open the app, hit the + symbol, then ‘Set up device’, ‘New Device’, enable Location Access, wait for the Nest Wifi Pro to be detected, and then scan the QR code when instructed. You’ll be directed to turn off your existing modem / router, connect the first Nest Wifi Pro to the mains, the connect it to the modem via the supplied Ethernet cable, and the power the modem back on.
It took me about ten minutes to set up the first node, after which you’ll be invited to install the others, which follows the same process of powering on and scanning the QR code to pair, which takes about five minutes each. Along with a firmware update, the initial set-up process took just over half an hour.
