AYN have also created a docking station for the AYN Odin with plenty of features, making great use of the space available.
The AYN Super dock measures approximately 5.92 x 4.75 x 4.43 inches (15.05 x 12.08 x 11.274 cm). On the front panel are two Nintendo 64 game ports for connecting original controllers. We love the addition of N64 ports so you can enjoy a more realistic experience with them. There are two USB 3.0 ports for connecting modern peripherals such as a mouse, keyboard or joysticks.

The back on the super dock has a USB Type-C port, HDMI port, three USB 3.0 ports and a Gigabit Ethernet port to give your AYN Odin a desktop PC like experience.

On either side of the dock are Gamecube joystick ports. As mentioned, the AYN Odin can easily run the Gamecube emulator Dolphin so this is a great opportunity to use the original controllers as a retro gaming console.

Hardware and Features
The Mediatek Dimensity 900 of the AYN Odin Lite is newer and more efficient, but the AYN Odin Pro’s Snapdragon 845 has better support and GPU performance.
One of the differences between the AYN Odin Pro (image) and the AYN Odin Lite is that the former comes with a Snapdradon 845 SoC while the latter is equipped with a Mediatek Dimensity D900.
The biggest difference between the AYN Odin Lite and Pro is in their internal hardware. The AYN Odin Lite is equipped with the newer Mediatek Dimensity D900 which is more efficient than the Snapdragon 845 inside the AYN Odin Pro. However, the Snapdragon 845 has the faster GPU, and when it comes to optimization and compatibility, the Snapdragon 845 has the advantage over the Dimensity 900 SoC.
Another difference between the two devices is with their storage and RAM. The AYN Odin Lite has 4GB RAM and it only has a 64GB variant. On the other hand, the AYN Odin Pro has 8GB RAM and three storage options—64GB, 128GB and 256GB. The difference in RAM can be felt, but since both devices have a microSD card slot, the difference in storage is not that big of a deal.
When it comes to connectivity, the newer AYN Odin Lite will have WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2. Both of which are a step up over the WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0 of the AYN Odin Pro. The AYN Odin Lite’s WiFi 6 will give you better performance when streaming games.
OS
Both handhelds run on Android, but the difference is that the AYN Odin Lite is shipped with Android 11 while the AYN Odin Pro comes with Android 10. The two are designed for native Android gaming, emulation and game streaming. The AYN Odin Pro, which has the Snapdragon 845, can also run Windows on ARM, allowing you to play some games that are only on Windows.
However, Windows on ARM is an open source project with a lot of kinks that still need polishing, and you’ll have to install it yourself. For some, this is easy, but for most people, it may not be worth the hassle.

I have spent hours playing Saints Row on this little darling of a device. The wifi never quit and the battery lasted several hours. I have never played long enough to run it completely out of battery but my estimates are 5-7 hours of gameplay.

For cloud gaming users, that is all that matters. Because these services are cloud based, all it has to do is play the stream and the cpu and memory make little difference. I did notice that you can pull performance stats from the right menu whenever you like and it will even show you the FPS that your favorite cloud service is streaming at. A nice little feature.

Using it for other games, like Roblox and Minecraft seemed to be equally as smooth. I have not really pushed the CPU. It is the “Lite” version of the Odin so it should be expected that its performance for high end mobile games probably is not on the same level as the Odin, but for any cloud gaming user, you can see from that stats above, it is more than capable of an optimized experience.

Enter the AYN Odin Pro
You might have heard of the AYN Odin Pro — it’s amassed over $3.8 million dollars and 11,000 backers on Indiegogo. The self-proclaimed “Ultimate Gaming Handheld” promises access not only to the libraries of the SNES or PSX, but also well past, dipping into those of the PlayStation 2, Wii, and even the 3DS. Add in game-streaming capabilities and you theoretically have the ultimate gaming handheld.
There are many specs I could throw at you, but consider this a layman’s review that’s concerned with demonstrable, real-life performance. That is: Will the AYN Odin Pro do what you want it to?
It better, you’d think, for the price. Including shipping from the AYN factory in Hong Kong, it set me back just shy of $320. Even accounting for the roughly $30 shipping, that’s close to the full price of a Switch. It also took about four months to get here. I bought this as a pre-order from a new company and am more than used to waiting for manufacturing like this, but it’s still part of the “price,” isn’t it?
But I won’t mince words with you: If “what you want it to” is “emulate pretty much anything from all retro consoles, the PS2, and the Nintendo GameCube on a convenient handheld device,” then yes, it will. Do you want to play The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker at the beach? Final Fantasy X-2 on a plane? Yoshi’s Island while you wait for takeout? The Odin can do that.
It feels a bit excessive to describe what the Odin does well — that’s just about everything it sets out to do. It’s particularly true for those of us who aren’t persnickety about perfectly imitating the visuals of a CRT or original Gameboy screen in sunlight.
The Odin will play just about whatever you want, whenever you want. Battery life is good, especially on airplane mode and with lower brightness. That screen brightness is really impressive, too, allowing me to play games in nearly full sunlight at the beach.

For the specifications on all three models, the prices are amazing! The Android gaming handheld area has been relatively quiet recently. GPD has enjoyed a long period of domination with their XD and XD+ consoles, they have also recently announced their GPD XP handheld. And not forgetting MOQI with their i7 gaming handheld, which can also be used as a mobile phone. Both series of devices are higher in price, so the AYN Odin comes in a little cheaper with amazing performance!
Could the AYN Odin be the best handheld gaming console for Android games and retro gaming? It is looking very promising! But we will have to wait just a little longer to find out, December 2021 can’t come soon enough!

The AYN Odin Lite and Pro both offer excellent value. These are the best Android handhelds right now, when it comes to emulation. They have active cooling for better performance than smartphones and tablets that have comparable specs, and the controls are responsive and a joy to use. These are definitely worth buying if you want a handheld device for playing Android games, emulation and streaming. That said, the AYN Odin Lite is the better pick if your main use-case is streaming due to its WiFi 6 connectivity. For Android gaming, emulation and playing Windows on ARM games, the AYN Odin Pro is the wiser choice.
The Software
The Odin Lite is running Android 11! This gives it a lot of the performance perks of the newer OS that are missing in its competition. It does have the Google Play Store and a wide range of compatibility with apps.
I was able to install and play Stadia (obviously) right from the Play Store. I also installed Minecraft and Roblox which worked flawlessly with the hardware controls with no setup for them.

During the initial setup, you can choose the standard Android home screen launcher or the Odin launcher. Since I wanted to experience their device, I went with the Odin launcher. It is very minimalistic and I love it. When you install games you can add it to the launch screen for easy “turn it on and play” functionality.

AYN Odin Base and Pro Technical Specifications
The Snapdragon 845 processor is found in mobile devices including the Samsung Galaxy S9, S9+ and Galaxy Note 9. The Samsung S9 series is an extremely capable device which is great for gaming. Android Play Store titles such as PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty Mobile, FIFA Mobile Soccer, Shadowgun Legends and Tekken will have no issues at all on the AYN Odin!
There is also the emulation side and the Ayn Odin is perfect as a retro gaming handheld. It supports the GameCube emulator Dolphin, PSP with PPSSPP, and every supported games console before that including Atari 2600 to Genesis.

What we found interesting is that the Base/Pro models run Android 10.0, while the Lite version runs the newer 11.0. We would expect support for Android 11.0 on the higher end models at a later date.
In addition, all three models support Project Treble which allows for faster operating system updates. This also allows you to use Generic System Image (GSI) compatible updates to flash to the ROM and still have access to the custom software. It is also possible to transform it into a handheld gaming PC by installing Windows on the Base & Pro models as it is ARM compatible.
In terms of custom software there appears to be support for screen mapping via built in software. This allows you to map the gaming controls to the touch screen. This means by pressing Up on the Digial Pad for example, it will emulate touching the Up area on the screen.

There is also a built in game launcher app which allows you to easily browse installed software and load a game instantly.

Console Emulation and Performance
That still leaves the performance of later generations. In the year 2000 with the PS2, the speed bumps begin, but it’s not until the following year’s GameCube that the hitches become noticeable.
Some games don’t run ideally. Music stuttering becomes more common, as do sudden framerate dips and sound glitches. These won’t ruin your experience; everything is still well past playable, but the hitches are present. Games now require individual settings to solve most of these issues. The Odin breaks the slightest of sweats and should be put into Performance Mode more often than not, which causes it to consume battery much more quickly.
As you might expect, the Wii gives the Odin a lot more trouble. It requires the most hand-holding and awkward fumbling with settings. Even then, many games just don’t feel quite right without a pointer to gesture with — perhaps this could be solved with a peripheral of some kind, but that’s not what this is about.
It’s a real shame, as the Wii is my favorite console of all time (partially owing to the fact that it also comes with a GameCube in it). Its uniqueness is what makes me love it so much. More than any other console, handheld or home, the experience the Wii provides is by far the most difficult to imitate. I came in expecting Wii games on the Odin to be pretty awkward, and, well, they are.
In moving on to the 3DS era, it’s worth noting that 3DS emulation is notoriously difficult. It’s officially possible on the Odin, but in the way that spaceflight became officially possible after we sent a chimp into orbit with no hope of return. I wouldn’t buy the Odin with the expectation of playing any 3DS games.
However, I’ve read it can run things like Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, and some of the Shin Megami Tensei games pretty well. If those matter to you, you’re in luck! Regardless, though, I would consider every 3DS game a hard-earned bonus rather than a reason for purchase.
With all you need to know about consoles out of the way, we still have mobile game streaming to cover. Well… sort of. Between Google Stadia, Nvidia GeForce Now, Steam Link, and Xbox Game Pass, I just don’t think streaming is there yet.
It seemed like the Odin could handle it with no problem, but the host and connectivity struggled. The Xbox Game Pass app is a nightmare. Nvidia GeForce Now requires logging into your other game accounts — sometimes multiple times — and frequently fails to connect. Google Stadia is probably closest to the promise of game streaming, but its limited library is a drawback, and my internet doesn’t play with it so well. Steam Link is the most viable but still requires you to be in-network with an open computer capable of playing the games in question.
If you live in a city and have fast internet, these services are probably much more viable. For me, they were a novelty. It was beyond entertaining to play Mixolumia while lying down on the couch, but the occasional frame drop means it’s not viable for score-chasing. I also still had to have my computer on to stream it via Steam Link. Adapting to keyboard and mouse games, or even just navigating Final Fantasy XIV’s launcher, is a headache and a half.
This still leaves you with the entire ecosystem of mobile games. You can easily enjoy games like Cookie Run: Kingdom, Genshin Impact (on Medium settings), Pokemon Unite, and more.
