Logitech’s Options software allows you to customize the buttons, adjust trackball speed, assign application specific settings and receive notification and status from your device.
It also allows you to check if there is a firmware update for your device which is awesome.
I am a big fan of the Logitech Options software because it has a simple and clean user interface and can be used to control all of your Logitech devices.

When you first launch the software, you will be presented with the Trackball setting which allows you to program the two buttons on the M575.
You also have the Point & Scroll setting which allows you to adjust the trackball’s cursor speed.

In the bottom center, the Logitech Options software displays the battery life of your device and also
whether the device is attached via the Unifying Receiver or Bluetooth.
Programming the buttons on the device is pretty straightforward.
After you select the button that you want to program, a dropdown appears where you can select from
pre-defined actions such as Copy, Close Window, Close Desktop, etc.

Hands-On Opinion: All-Thumbs Is Okay

So here’s the most important question: What’s it like using the trackball? I expected to hate it, but actually found it a mostly pleasant experience. I notice less pain in my hand after using the Ergo M575 versus a standard mouse or touch pad, which is exactly why the product exists. Maybe it’s the familiarity with analog sticks bestowed by countless gamepads; maybe it’s my thumb being happily put to good use. But either way, it’s nice to find respite from these all-too-familiar wrist aches.

But this design won’t be for everyone. I still haven’t adapted to using the secondary buttons with my index finger after weeks of using the M575, for example. And often, I’m grateful that my cat is the only witness to my trying to wiggle the device to wake up my sleeping PC. It’s hard to undo decades of muscle memory from using more traditional pointing devices. Don’t expect to fully adapt to the Ergo M575 overnight.

Unfortunately, the Ergo M575 doesn’t quite work for me from an ergonomic perspective. I spend a lot of time reading, which means I use the scroll wheel quite a bit, and I’ve yet to find a way to comfortably rest my thumb on the trackball while my middle finger’s on the scroll wheel. That means I have to regularly shift my grip on the device, which is just disruptive enough for me to notice while I’m working. This usually results in my keeping my hand in an uncomfortable position.

It’s also a shame that I can’t quite get the precision from this trackball that I can from a conventional mouse. This is no surprise when it comes to gaming—no, I didn’t expect to be able to play first-person shooters with the Ergo M575—but it’s noticeable when selecting text as well. Either I end up selecting too few characters, which means I have to retype text, or I end up highlighting practically everything on the page. Neither outcome is desirable.

But it’s worth noting that these are largely personal issues. Someone with different-size hands who rarely needs to scroll through lots of text and select a small portion won’t encounter these problems. The Logitech Ergo M575 isn’t disappointing to me because it’s an abject failure; it’s more of a frustration that it comes so close to being something I’d like to use whenever I’m not playing a PC game.

As for who should consider the Ergo M575, if you’re a right-handed desk worker who’s experienced wrist or elbow discomfort after long sessions with your PC, it’s well worth taking a look. The M575 is more affordable than some of Logitech’s other ergonomic products, and it’s a solidly built device that hasn’t given me any problems from a wireless-connectivity or customizability standpoint. The four stars for general use comes from the PCMag «royal we»; my hands would also give it one-and-a-half opposable thumbs up.

At a Glance, You Might Mistake It for a Mouse

Logitech designed the Ergo M575 for right-handed use; lefties will have to look elsewhere for an ergonomically minded input device. If it weren’t for the prominent blue trackball, the Ergo’s shape could pass for a standard Logitech mouse. Standing 5.3 inches tall with a footprint of 3.9 by 1.9 inches, it has a flat-gray color scheme, two primary mouse buttons, and a rubbery-feeling scroll wheel. The other primary difference between this and other mice is the inclusion of two secondary Forward and Back buttons along the side of the left mouse button.

Oh, and the Ergo M575 doesn’t have the same rubber feet as traditional mice, either. Rather than using smooth PTFE rubber designed to glide across the surface of a desk or mouse pad like a penguin sliding on snow and ice, the M575 is the polar opposite. It features the grippiest of rubber feet, so trying to move it across the desk is like watching a penguin belly-flop on gravel—it’ll move, but it’s not going to be a pleasant experience. Better to just let the device remain in its designated resting place.

The Ergo M575 is accommodating in other ways. It works with Windows, macOS, Chrome OS, and Linux computers using either Bluetooth or the bundled Logitech Unifying wireless dongle. The latter uses a radio-frequency (RF) connection that supports multiple Unifying devices on one dongle. (It can also be used with an iPad via Bluetooth.) Changing between Bluetooth and RF is as simple as pressing a button on the bottom of the device. The trackball uses a single AA battery, whose life Logitech rates at 20 months with Bluetooth and 24 months with the Unifying USB receiver. It’s a shame that it doesn’t support wired connections, though.

Similar Products

The Ergo works well out of the box, but the optional Logitech Options software can be used to customize various aspects of the experience. Most of that customization arrives via the ability to set the secondary buttons’ or scroll wheel’s functions. You can also swap the left and right mouse buttons, although I’m not sure how useful that would be given the device’s shape.

Mac users might care, though, about that kind of swappage. That way, you can invoke Mission Control in macOS by pressing the top secondary button, for instance, or minimize the active window by tapping the button under the scroll wheel. The trackball’s sensitivity (nominally 400dpi) can be adjusted using a slider.

Introduction

Trackball mouses are very popular in the audio recording and engineering industry because they are more efficient and comfortable
than regular mouses when working across large screens with complex software interfaces.
With a trackball mouse, there is less elbow and wrist movement and your thumb is all you need to maneuver the ball which
can also help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome.

If you have never used a trackball mouse before then don’t worry, it’s really simple but there’s definitely a learning curve to it.
Instead of sliding the mouse to navigate, the navigation is now done through the trackball.
With that in mind, you rest your hand on the mouse with your fingers lying on the left and right buttons, and move the pointer across the screen.
At first, it takes some time to get used to it but after a while, you start to get the hang of it.

Logitech recently released the M575 which is a new trackball mouse that replaces its predecessor M570 that was released back in 2010.
The M575 comes with 1 year of limited warranty and retails for $49.99 via
Logitech’s website.
It is available in graphite and off-white colors and features dual wireless connectivity via a USB receiver or Bluetooth.

Logitech includes a USB receiver which can be stored in the battery compartment so you don’t have to worry about misplacing it.
Connecting via Bluetooth is great for iPad users because you do not need to use the USB receiver.
The M575 uses a single AA battery which Logitech says it can power the device for up to 24 months when using the USB receiver
and up to 20 months when using the Bluetooth connectivity.

Compared to the more expensive MX Ergo, the M575’s scroll wheel lacks the tilting capabilities and also lacks the rechargeable battery.
The tilted precision scroll wheel on the MX Ergo lets you customize the trackball angle from 0 to 20 degrees for a more comfortable hand position.
Having the ability to switch between angles is good for improving wrist posture.

The right hand side of the mouse has a slight contour but it’s the left hand side where the programmable buttons are located.
To utilize these features, you are required to use the Logitech Options software which I will talk more about a little later.
The buttons are easy to press and are the perfect size.
Logitech says that the M575 has been designed to perform for more than 3 million clicks.
The M575 is a right-handed mouse only so left-handed users will have to look for a different trackball mouse.

Build quality is excellent and the M575 is made of recycled plastic which helps reduce our carbon footprint.
The plastic parts in M575 include 50% for Graphite and 21% for Off-white.
Logitech has given the M575 a ridged surface to help with grip and a matte finish which doesn’t pick up fingerprint marks.
I have used both the M570 and MX Ergo and I can safely say that the M575 feels better than the M570 but it also lacks the premium-feeling of the MX Ergo.

Physically, the M575 is 1.89″ deep, 3.94″ wide, and it stands 5.28″ in height and weighs 145 g.
Logitech has done an excellent job of designing the shape of the M575 to ensure your hand and forearm stay relaxed after many hours of use.

With a regular mouse you need plenty of desk space in order to comfortably move the mouse around but a trackball mouse
can be ideal for tight workspaces and busy desks.
If you are working on a small desk or even a regular desk that is cluttered with things, the M575 will help reclaim a large portion of your desk.

I have been using the M575 for about a week now and it’s been a great experience so far. I have used trackball mouses before and I love them.
Moving the trackball is smooth and precise and it is quite sturdy and does not feel loose.
The movement of the trackball is tracked using precision optical sensors from the inside of the mouse.

Something that I dislike about the M575 is the lack of the rechargeable battery.
I know this comes down to personal preference but I prefer having a built-in rechargeable battery like the one in the MX Ergo
rather than a replaceable battery.

Logitech ERGO M575 performance

After using the ERGO M575 in all aspects of my computing life for the last week, I can safely say that it has shattered my preconceptions about trackball mice. Logitech’s modern offering is a far cry from the Marble Mouse that haunted my early gaming days.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing, however. There is an adjustment period to be expected when making the switch to a trackball. In my first few hours with the M575, I would find myself occasionally attempting to push it around the desk, And controlling the cursor through the trackball was done with the grace of a newborn giraffe being catapulted across a frozen lake.

You’ll also have to spend some time adjusting the cursor speed in both your operating system and Logitech Options to find the right balance for regular use. If you’re a Windows user, I’d also recommend disabling ‘Enhance pointer precision’ within the pointer options tab of your mouse settings. Disabling this option removes any additional mouse acceleration applied to your movements, making the trackball feel much more precise. 

Once you’ve personalized your responsiveness, you’ll find the movement of the cursor becomes much more intuitive. You won’t be topping leaderboards in Call of Duty any time soon though. This isn’t exactly a gaming mouse after all. But you will find that movements — both subtle and large — become much easier to predict and accurately pinpoint. It’s surprisingly intuitive actually. Excuse the pun, but once you get the ball rolling on the M575, there’s very little getting in the way of adaptation thanks to its simplicity and comfort. After only a day of use, I was handling the M575 almost as accurately as I would with my regular mouse.

It was all shaping up to be a clean sweep for the ERGO M575. Until, that is, the thought about it not being a gaming mouse popped back into my head. I didn’t want to sabotage the M575 at the last hurdle, but morbid curiosity did keep me wondering.

Before I knew it, I was dropping into a Counter Strike lobby full of angry teenagers who were entirely unsympathetic to my ongoing M575 experiment. I spent the first few rounds being mocked and derided for my awful aim and general ineptitude. But remembering I had programmed one of the buttons to finely adjust the cursor sensitivity allowed me to slowly ‘tune-in’ to the sweet spot for my aim. 

While I realized my dreams of spinning the trackball so fast that I could pull off 900-degree no-scopes and crowning myself the Tony Hawk of Counter Strike had faded, I was no longer the worst person in the lobby.

My thumb almost never needed to leave the surface of the trackball, meaning I had continuous control over my aim. I never had to lift the mouse to recenter it, which would only cost valuable milliseconds in combat. And it would seem that all these years of console gaming and speed-texting had developed a keen sense of precision with my thumbs that I wasn’t fully appreciative of until this moment.

However, it may not have improved my middling gaming capabilities, and an optical mouse is, admittedly, reliably more accurate. Whether that’s due to familiarity or not, I am unsure. But I was pleasantly surprised at just how easy it was to adjust to the trackball. Not to mention performing at a recognizable level so quickly.
