Perfect plastic portability
The Amazon Fire 7 is a fairly chunky tablet finished in matte plastic, which curves into the 7-inch screen. All you’ll find on the back is Amazon’s A to Z arrow and the 2-megapixel camera lens at the top left.
There’s nothing on the bottom edge, but there’s a flap for the MicroSD card on the right and the mono speaker is on the left. Up top you’ll find the volume controls, 3.5mm headphone port, Micro USB port, and power button..
Thick bezels surround the 7-inch IPS LCD screen, which has a resolution of 1,024 x 600 pixels. There’s also a 2-megapixel front-facing camera.
I found the Amazon Fire 7 was adequate for reading books and web browsing, but not so great for watching movies or gaming.
Build quality is good and it feels solid. The Amazon Fire 7 is the perfect size for portability. It’s comfortable to hold with one hand and easy to stow in a bag. I also like the new muted colors. My review unit is plum, but you can get it in sage or twilight blue, and classic black is still an option.
While the screen is fairly bright, it can be tough to read outdoors in direct sunlight. It’s also not the sharpest screen around. Both the Amazon Fire HD 8 and the 8-inch Walmart Onn have bigger screens that are also slightly sharper.

The Amazon Fire HD 8 also boasts dual stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support and they really blow the mono speaker in the Fire 7 away.
I found the Amazon Fire 7 was adequate for reading books and web browsing, but not so great for watching movies or gaming. The screen quality and poor sound definitely let it down.

Sound
Sound quality remains generally consistent between this generation and the last.
It’s nicely balanced, keeping the treble, bass, and midrange in line, and there’s a suitable amount of detail to it – although not enough to want to use it as your main listening device.
Much like the original Fire 7, it’s not a particularly sophisticated sound, lacking the rhythmic and dynamic skills necessary to capture a song’s excitement over headphones.
Playing Golden Earring’s Radar Love through Tidal, there isn’t a sense of the upbeat pop and momentum that’s in the track, although at this price we don’t expect the world.
Its tinny speakers are best avoided, having hard edges at high volumes and a closed-in midrange. If you’ve got a good Bluetooth speaker that you can pair this tablet with, we’d recommend doing that.

Conclusions
At $50, the 2019 Amazon Fire 7 is the most reliable inexpensive tablet you can buy. But it is not good, and we do not recommend it in 2021. The Fire HD 8 costs $40 more, but is a much stronger value all around. And the 2021 edition of the Fire HD 10 is our Editors’ Choice for inexpensive tablets, as it has enough RAM and performance to actually feel responsive and enjoyable.

Amazon’s Fire tablet line, while Android compatible, are best thought of as Amazon media consumption devices. With a bit of work, you can turn them into general-purpose Android slates, but we think the Amazon restrictions can be a blessing in disguise: They prevent you from getting too frustrated with your inexpensive tech.
Amazon’s Fire OS is derived from Android, and it runs Android apps, but the basic UI is nothing like Android. If you love Amazon, there’s a lot to love here. The interface is much simpler and clearer than on most Android tablets, with bold words pointing the way to Books, Video, Games, Music, and Audiobooks. Your Amazon content library is automatically synced, loaded, and shown in every pane, and you have the option to stream or download content. Nearly every page tries to sell you something as well. This is Amazon, after all, so the company is guessing what you like and trying to provide more of it for you.
All of the Google apps (such as YouTube) are absent, as are some Microsoft Office apps, many popular mapping and transit apps such as Citymapper and Waze, any alternative web browsers such as Chrome and Firefox, and the American Airlines and Delta apps, for example. Of course, you can always go to the mobile sites, but it isn’t the same. We turned to a backup APK from a phone so we could load Marvel Unlimited.
By default, the lock screen shows colorful ads for products on Amazon. Right now, our unit is shifting between a clay mask kit and a 10,400mAh power bank (not the Anker one we recommend!). You can get rid of those ads for $15.
There are some pluses to Amazon’s Android spin-off. Most notably, the kids’ content and parental controls are excellent, with a $2.99/month FreeTime Unlimited subscription service stuffed with age-appropriate books and videos, and a web dashboard for parents that lets you monitor and control the usage of up to four child accounts.
Amazon’s tablets now support Alexa, but without the always-on «Hey Alexa» functionality that makes the Echo so useful. You have to hold down the home button to voice search (hands-free search is available if the Fire 7 is connected to power or if its screen is already on). You may be more likely to use the tablet as a place to read query results, as you can now tell your Echo to «send the answer to my Fire.»

Yes, there are other cheap tablets out there. You can find them on the shelves at your local drug store, or in the depths of Amazon.com. Many of their specs are similar to the Fire’s; some even have more storage. Still, though, they give me the willies because by and large, they’re running ancient versions of Android and have essentially no customer support. So we prefer to recommend Amazon’s tablets.
The original Amazon Fire was our Editor’s Choice for cheap tablets because it was a no-nonsense way to consume media and play games. The current Fire 7 struggles with performance because the needs of the Android OS are starting to outstrip its 1GB of available RAM, slowing everything down. The Fire HD 8, meanwhile, is only $30 more than the Fire 7. It has better performance all around thanks to more RAM, better Wi-Fi, more storage, and stronger speakers. The HD 8 becomes the no-brainer, easy-to-use affordable tablet the Fire 7 once was, so that one, not the 7-inch model, is our Editors’ Choice.

While the Fire 7’s screen might look like the old version, and has the same 1024 x 600 resolution, Amazon says that it has made improvements to how the tablet handles sharpness and contrast.
But any positive changes made aren’t immediately visible, and putting the original tablet next to this one you’d have a tough time definitively saying which one looks more detailed.
What is obvious is the change to the colour palette, which is definitely warmer now. Watching a stream of Stranger Things on Netflix, the skin tones are redder and look a little punchier than the somewhat washed-out picture of the original Fire 7.

It was never going to be the last word when it comes to detail or contrast – Apple’s iPad leaps ahead of it in terms of dark detail and subtlety – but it’s perfectly watchable and those looking for a cheap tablet to entertain their children, who will probably be mostly watching brightly-coloured cartoons, will be satisfied with it.
Books and web pages look pretty crisp too, so as a budget eReader (and a more multi-purpose alternative to some of Amazon’s own pricier Kindles) it’s a safe bet.
Amazon Fire 7 (2017) – Screen
While the build quality might punch slightly above the Fire 7’s low, low price, the screen is very much what you would expect for a cheap tablet. The 7-inch display’s resolution remains 1024 x 600, which gives a pixel density of 171ppi. This equates to big, blocky pixels, which are particularly bad for rendering smooth-looking text and also not great for images.
If you want to use the Fire 7 as a tablet for predominantly reading your Kindle books, that text rendering isn’t ideal and makes the experience fatiguing. Still, web browsing on the Fire 7 isn’t the worst experience in the world.
Then there’s how the resolution and aspect ratio handles magazines, which is a big deal for Amazon’s new Prime Reading selling point. Not only is the resolution an issue in terms of clarity, but the aspect ratio means when zoomed all the way out on a page, you often have a big black bar at the bottom of the screen. Using pinch-to-zoom to get a closer look at the page then ends up with a rather blurry experience due to that low resolution.
Amazon has said that the newer IPS panel has better clarity and contrast. If there’s a difference, it seems marginal. Colours still aren’t particularly punchy and blacks aren’t great, either. Watching videos on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video does a decent enough job, though.

There’s no ambient light sensor, so you’re left manually adjusting the brightness. The brightest setting will just about get you by on all but the brightest days outdoors, but you still might find yourself struggling.
There’s a Blue Shade mode that reduces the blue light for using the tablet at night without disturbing your sleep. It’s far from an elegant approach, especially when compared to something like Night Shift on an iPad. Blue Shade just makes your screen really, really orange tinted.
I found the display picked up greasy fingerprints very easily as well, so be prepared to constantly wipe it down.
Ultimately, it’s a shame there haven’t been improvements to the screen resolution at least, but then that’s perhaps asking too much for a tablet at this price. Considering the Fire 7 could be seen as a gateway to Amazon’s ebooks, digital magazines and store front, perhaps Amazon could’ve looked at it as being subsidised with the view of recouping elsewhere.

Display, Audio, and Cameras
The display remains a 7-inch, 1,020-by-600 LCD. Pixel density is rather lower at 171 ppi, meaning you can definitely notice pixelation when looking closely at the screen or reading a book. At 335 nits, it’s bright enough for indoor use, but you won’t be able to see it in direct sunlight so using it by the pool or at the beach is pretty much out of the question. Color accuracy is decent but a little cool. Viewing angles are just okay, so you may have problems seeing the screen at certain angles.
Audio is a disappointment. While the speaker has been moved from the back to the side of the tablet, it continues to offer mediocre sound quality. Peak volume comes in at 90dB, but anything much higher than 60dB sounds tinny. At any volume, the sound is flat and there’s not a hint of bass. Luckily there’s a 3.5mm headphone jack and Bluetooth 4.1 LE for external audio.
The Fire 7 has 2MP front and rear cameras. In bright light, the front-facing camera is acceptable for video chat or a quick selfie, but doesn’t compare with what you get on a modern cell phone. The rear camera is also fine in bright light for quick shots of receipts or documents. Neither camera performs well in low light, which is not unexpected since camera quality is not one of the tablet’s main selling points.

You might struggle to tell the difference between the Amazon Fire 7 (2017) and its two-year-old predecessor. They look very similar indeed, with the same functional matt plastic body (available in black, blue, red or yellow), embossed Amazon logo, and chunky screen bezels.
However, while the new Fire 7 occupies a familiar footprint, it’s actually 1mm thinner, 8 grams lighter, and 1mm longer than the Amazon Fire 7 (2015).
The keen-eyed among you may also have noticed that there’s been a slight reshuffle of the buttons and ports. It’s nothing drastic, but the volume keys and the 3.5mm headphone port have switched places along the top edge.
In practice, this means that all of the tablet’s physical controls are positioned near the corners, making them a little easier to reach without looking.
That’s an improvement in our book, although the placement still feels somewhat awkward when using the tablet in portrait mode, as does the decision to pile everything (the micro USB port is also here) onto one short edge.
Well, we say everything. The microSD slot is positioned on the right-hand edge of the device.
Amazon claims to have improved the display of the Amazon Fire 7 (2017) over its 2015 predecessor, with better contrast levels. That may well be true, but two core facts remain: it’s not very bright and it’s not very sharp.
If you had any aspirations of taking your new Fire 7 out into the sunshine this summer, you’ll be sorely disappointed. Doing so will render the screen a washed-out, overly reflective mess.
It’s fine when you bring it indoors, but doing so will serve to bring home how fuzzy the picture is. Perhaps we’re being overly harsh given that low low price point, but we’d suggest that 1024 x 600 falls short for any mainstream tablet in 2017.
Keep in mind that even a bog-standard budget smartphone will hit at least 1280 x 720 these days — and such phones invariably feature displays that are much smaller than the 7-inch example here.
Perhaps this really is all you can get for $50/£50 right now. But given the screen is the key component in any tablet, we’d argue that either raising the price by 10 to 20 dollars/pounds or dropping the cameras altogether would be preferable in order to hit that 720p minimum standard.
