What is the Leica SL (Typ 601)?
There’s something about Leica that makes many photographers go slightly weak at the knees. It’s a name that’s indelibly associated with some of the greatest photographers of all time, including the likes of Annie Leibovitz, Robert Frank, and Henri Cartier-Bresson. The company’s most iconic product line, its M-series rangefinders, is more than 60 years old, and took the seismic transition from film to digital in its stride while barely changing in design. Indeed, the current Leica M-P looks more or less the same as the 1954 M-3, while the Leica M-A is just about the last ‘serious’ 35mm film camera still available.
With all this nostalgia as a distraction, it can be easy to overlook another side of Leica that’s emerged in recent years – that of a company aiming to provide unique tools for professional photographers (or perhaps ambitious enthusiasts with very accommodating bank managers). First were the S-series medium-format DSLRs, based around a 45x30mm Pro Format sensor, and now the company’s SL (Typ 601) full-frame compact system camera.
Leica is only the second company to bring out a mirrorless model with a full-frame sensor, after Sony’s groundbreaking Alpha 7 series, although logic dictates that it certainly won’t be the last. The SL stretches the word ‘compact’ in the CSC acronym to breaking point, being as large and as heavy as the average full-frame DSLR. But it’s also a heavyweight in terms of features, being blessed with 11 frames per second continuous shooting, internal 4K video recording and an extraordinary 4.4-million-dot electronic viewfinder, which is easily the best we’ve yet seen on a stills camera.
All this cutting-edge technology might seem alien for Leica, and we rather suspect that the company has spent a lot of time recently picking the brains of its long-time collaborator Panasonic. But no matter where all this know-how comes from, one thing is clear – the SL is a serious proposition. Let’s take a closer look at what it offers.

С этой целью было разработано бесплатное программное обеспечение Leica TL для операционных систем iOS и Android.

Следует признать, что до ISO 800 включительно JPEG в плане качества изображений нам все-таки нравятся. Четкость контуров с показателем в 1885 линейных пар на высоту кадра для APS-C-матрицы с разрешением 24 Мпикс явяется достаточно высокой. Начиная с ISO 3200 проявляется слишком сильное вмешательство алгоритма размытия. Однако, благодаря именно ему вплоть до ISO 6400 уровень шумов остается довольно низким — хотя про детализацию и четкость можно сказать то же самое
Для сравнения: JPEG-картинки при ISO 3200 относительно шумов имеют заслуживающее внимание низкое значение VN1 — всего 1,8. Формат DNG при такой же светочувствительности со своими 3,9, то есть более чем в два раза больше, гораздо более шумные, хотя при этом и могут похвастать высококлассной четкостью контуров в 2100 линейных пар на высоту кадра
С JPEG в этом случае фотографам придется довольствоваться всего 1251 парой линий.
Не хватает, как мы уже намекали чуть ранее, более совершенного программного обеспечения. В частности, удивительно также то обстоятельство, что электронный и бесшумный затвор невозможно включить вручную. Он автоматически начинает работать только при выдержке от 1/5000 секунды. До этого Leica TL2 работает со слегка слышимым механическим затвором. Незначительная деталь? Не совсем. Потому что только лишь с использованием электронного затвора камера достигает своего наивысшего темпа серийной съемки: вплоть до 21,5 кадра в секунду вместо 7,1, а также 30 снимков за серию — это говорит о многом.

Verdict
Taking on Canon and Nikon in the professional camera sector is a challenge that’s proved too much for a long list of would-be challengers in the past (Minolta, Olympus, Contax, Pentax and Rollei among them).
Leica has been here before too, particularly with its 35mm SLRs, but things are changing quite dramatically now and the catalyst is the coming-of-age of mirrorless cameras which means there’s a whole new playing field. Consequently, the SL puts Leica back in the game… which, at this point, is what matters the most because, in reality, it’s been a long time since the marque could be considered a serious contender in this category.
So, as we noted at the outset, the SL has a fair amount of weight resting on its (broadish) shoulders, but it looks to be up to the job. Beyond the superlative built quality – an integral part of the whole Leica experience – is a highly capable camera which builds on the key benefits of the mirrorless design (particularly, in its case, the EVF) while delivering a professionally-focused set of features and specifications.
The good news for Leica is that, beyond this serious intent and its slightly austere looking exterior, the SL actually is, more than anything else, both an engaging and endearing camera. Both are characteristics that may just give it a head start.

Video quality and features
Yes, it’s a Leica with 4K video recording, we’ve finally lived to see this day. The company has finally decided to make a camera that isn’t entirely focused on taking photographs, but is also a useful tool for video. You get a choice of two different aspect ratios when it comes to 4K recording; regular 16:9 that maxes out at 30 fps and cinema format that’s a little more narrow to achieve more dramatic effect and is also limited to 24 fps to retain more genuine move look.
There is a slight downside to recording in 4K and that is that the video is cropped meaning you are essentially recording the video on a camera with APS-C sensor, so do keep that in mind. We can’t really blame Leica for doing this, because it’s the case for almost every camera out there and it seems like the technology hasn’t matured enough to get around that limitation. If you aren’t interested in 4K or you want more framerate options you also get 1080p or 720p video recording with a maximum frame rate of 120 fps. We were pleasantly surprised that Leica remembered to include such a high frame rate as on option that can give you some really great slow motion videos. If you wish to record even higher quality video you can do so via the HDMI port and in 10-bit 4:2:2 format.
For those who are really particular with their audio equipment, they will be very happy with the inclusion of microphone and headphone jacks. Even those who like to post process their videos to their own taste aren’t left out because there’s a V-Log L gamma profile for that. As a bonus feature, there’s also a digital image stabilization to help you get more smoother videos and in real life it works quite well and does what it aims to do.
About its video quality, we can only say that we’re pretty satisfied with the footage you can get with this camera. It’s still not the best around, but it comes very close and we doubt that many people will be disappointed. It is indeed really exciting being able to say that we can recommend a Leica camera to those planning to do some serious video work and we are happy that the company finally went down this route of doing a no-compromise camera rather than the one limited in any way like some of those previous products.

Автоматическая коррекция баланса белого дополнена восемью предустановками (включая четыре для различных типов флуоресцентного освещения), средствами для создания и сохранения одной пользовательской настройки и ручной регулировкой цветовой температуры в диапазоне от 2000 до 11500 градусов Кельвина. Нет ни тонкой настройки, ни автоматического брекетинга баланса белого.
Так есть ли в SL какие-нибудь излишества? Что ж, у него есть как встроенный GPS-приемник, так и Wi-Fi, что некоторые могут или не могут счесть излишеством. If there’s one thing Leica really has got absolutely right with the SL, it’s the viewfinder. Its 4.4-million-dot EyeRes finder gives exceptional detail, and a larger view than the optical finders on even top-of-the-range full-frame DSLRs. Its 60fps refresh rate means there’s barely any lag, either. In addition to this, it can display a wide range of exposure information, overlay your choice of gridlines and even display electronic levels. The net result isn’t just the most impressive electronic viewfinder yet, but it’s probably the finest viewfinder on any full-frame camera to date, surpassing even the best optical finders such as that on the Canon EOS 5DS R.
The EVF is backed up by a 3in, 1.04-million-dot rear screen that also gives a bright, detailed view. It’s touch-sensitive, which means it can be used to select the focus point and change certain settings, including ISO and exposure compensation. An eye sensor allows the camera to switch seamlessly between the two viewing methods during shooting. It’s just a pity that the LCD isn’t articulated in any way, which is a disadvantage compared to the tilting screen on the Sony Alpha 7R II.

Essential elements
Like the Q, the SL conforms to Leica’s minimalist approach – as expressed in the slogan “Das Wesentliche” which translates as “the essential” – only more so. This is most evident in the processing options available for JPEG capture which comprise simply adjustments for contrast, colour saturation and sharpness. Monochrome capture is accessed via the colour saturation settings. There’s no choice of compression levels and certainly no gimmicks like filter effects.
Autofocusing is via contrast-detection measurements on the sensor with the choice of 49 – which provides about 80 percent frame coverage – or 37 points. There’s the choice of auto or manual point selection plus a zone mode which uses a moveable cluster of nine points. Switching between single-shot and continuous operation is done manually, but there is a full-time manual override which kicks in automatically when the lens’s focusing collar is turned. Low-light AF assist is provided by a built-in illuminator and when manually focusing there’s the choice of a magnified image and/or a focusing peaking display in one of four colours. Curiously, though, only the peaking display is automatically activated when the focusing collar is rotated, and image magnification has to be separately engaged.
Leica keeps things very simple as far as exposure control is concerned. The standard set of modes is supported by an AE lock, up to +/-3.0 of compensation and auto bracketing over sequences of three, five and seven frames. The AEB facility can also be set to HDR capture which combines the three frames to give an expanded dynamic range. There are no separate adjustments for dynamic range expansion, noise reduction or lens corrections, although the camera will certainly be doing some of this in the background as a matter of course. How do we know this? Because when either R or M lenses are fitted via their adaptors, lens correction menus do indeed become available.
The SL has a conventional focal plane shutter – a sensor shutter may come later – with a speed range of 60-1/8000 second plus ‘B’ (which has a maximum duration of 30 minutes). The shutter assembly is tested to 200,000 cycles and backed by a two-year warranty. Flash sync is at all speeds up to 1/250 second, but there’s no built-in flash. External units sync via an ISO-standard hotshoe or a PC terminal, and two new dedicated on-camera flash units accompany the SL – the SF 64 (which has a metric guide number of 64 at ISO 100) and the smaller SF 40.
Auto white balance correction is supplemented by eight presets (including four for different types of fluoro lighting), provisions for making and storing one custom setting, and manual colour temperature adjustment over a range of 2000 to 11,500 degrees Kelvin. There is neither fine-tuning nor auto WB bracketing.
So does the SL possess any frills? Well, it does have both a built-in GPS receiver and WiFi which may or may not be considered frills by some. There’s also an intervalometer (programmable for up to 9999 frames), a dual-delay self-timer and provisions for entering copyright information, but there’s no doubt that Leica has been pretty rigorous in applying the ‘Das Wesentliche’ ethos. And, on balance, the SL really doesn’t lack anything that’s essential in terms of either its control systems and supporting functions, or its displays and operation.
