Pixel Buds 2 Review Summary

It’s clear from this review that the Pixel Buds 2 is a marked improvement over the gen 1s. Despite offering just above average sound quality they are still worthy of being on our list of the best wireless earbuds and this is due to their excellent design, awesome Google integrations and amazingly quick charge times. If you’re an Android user, these are well worth considering if you’re in the market.

Features

One of the benefits of a pair of buds from the likes of Apple, Google and Samsung is how much better integrated they are with your phone. If you’re an Android user with a compatible device, you’ll benefit from instant pairing as soon as you bring the buds close to your phone. I also particularly like the dedicated battery status indicator accessible in the notification shade.

On initial setup, you’ll be directed to the Pixel Buds app, which isn’t really an app but a new area of the settings menu. Here you have a few options to tweak how they perform, but there isn’t an in-depth EQ or much in the way of customisation. Instead, you can alter how the touch controls work, or whether or not music stops playing when you remove them from your ear. It’s all basic stuff, but I like how it integrates with the smartphone.

The touchpads on the Pixel Buds 2 respond to various swipes and presses. For example, a swipe forward raises the volume, while a double tap ends a call. These all work on an iPhone too.

You can also call up Google Assistant with a long press. I like the way Assistant is built in here, and access is quick enough to make it more than usable. Set a timer, check the weather, read out any notifications: the Assistant rarely fails to act on a request almost immediately.

While set-up is a breeze, I have had issues with connectivity. There’s a slight but audible hiss in the buds when there’s no sound – less than ideal if you want to quickly call up the Assistant.

I also suffered from either one of the earbuds falling out of sync for a couple of seconds when connected (in this instance to a Pixel 4 XL) and some minor bouts of lag when watching videos. Neither of these were a constant issue, but they popped up frequently enough to be. It looks like a recent firmware update fixed some larger issues to do with connectivity, which bodes well for these smaller quirks being ironed out in future updates.

I’ve been getting roughly 5 hours of juice from the Pixel Buds 2 before they need a charge in the case – which has enough capacity for a further four charges. This is perfectly fine, and close to what you’d get from the pair of AirPods.

Yet, the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus and their ridiculous 11 hours of charge from the buds skews the results slightly. Still, 5 hours is good going and should be enough for most situations. Pop them back in the case and they charge quickly too. One thing that I did notice was that each bud discharged at a very variable rate, so the left one could be down to 20% while the right was still on 30%.

The case supports both fast wired charging via a USB-C cable, and it can charge wirelessly if you have a Qi pad about. It doesn’t charge on Google’s own Pixel Stand though, as I assume the coils are placed too high.

5 hours is either going to be fine, or not enough

Battery Life has been one of the more controversial aspects of Pixel Buds. With options like Samsung’s Galaxy Buds+ providing 11 hours on a charge for just the earbuds, it’s understandable to view Google’s 5-hour claim as pretty pathetic.

Clearly, a lot of people use their earbuds for more than a few hours at a time, whether that be while working, making phone calls, or for other reasons. Personally, I’m not in that group. I had trouble working a single lengthy testing session into my Pixel Buds review period. Even as comfortable as the Buds are, having anything in my ears that long is just not a great time.

In my testing, I ran the Pixel Buds for a little over 3 hours and, in that time, the buds drained to roughly 45% — though weirdly with a discharge rate that varies between both buds. Doing simple math, that means they would have died at a little over 5 hours of use. So basically, Google’s claim is accurate!

The bad news? 5 hours might not be enough for some people. The good news? The charging case supports quick charging which can give at least an hour’s worth of power in just 10 minutes. I’d wager that the majority of people who need more than 5 hours of battery life can find 10 minutes during their session to give a quick top-up.

Wireless charging can be a little finicky

One last note on charging. The case accepts both USB-C and Qi wireless charging. The former works as you’d expect, but Qi can be just a little bit picky.

Specifically, you’ll find that aligning the Pixel Buds case on a wireless charger is a little harder than on a smartphone. That’s simply because the size of the coils is smaller compared to smartphones and other larger devices. On the Pixel Stand, for example, you have to flip the case upside to get it to charge. Even on a flat charger, you’ll need to spend a second or two finding the “sweet spot.” It’s slightly annoying, but only barely. The indicator light is on the outside, too, which helps matters.

Ridiculously comfortable

One of the most important things about the hardware of earbuds is fit and comfort and this is something that I feel Google has absolutely nailed. The Pixel Buds are very small compared to normal silicone-tip wireless earbuds. They’re slimmer than Samsung’s Galaxy Buds and smaller in almost every dimension compared to other options.

Why does this matter? Pixel Buds don’t stand out much while you’re wearing them. Often, my wife doesn’t even notice that I’m wearing them simply because they don’t stick out from my ear at all.

Google also designed the Buds to be lightweight and that has an equally strong impact on comfort. I’ve worn Pixel Buds for hours at a time and my ears feel considerably less fatigued — if at all — compared to other options. Part of this is the weight, part of it the overall size, and part of it the vent Google put into each earbud.

That vent is probably one of the more controversial aspects of the Buds. On one hand, the vent means the silicone tips don’t make your ears feel “plugged,” but on the other hand it means outside noise will always be let in.

For me, the “plugged” feeling has always been one of the aspects of most truly wireless earbuds that I’ve hated the most and why I’ve mostly stuck with the original AirPods for a long time. Google’s design doesn’t completely eliminate this feeling, but it greatly reduces it. I can speak and move around while wearing Pixel Buds without discomfort, though eating still feels strange with them in. Still, it’s far and away better than the vast majority of other wireless earbuds.

Comfort is perhaps the biggest win of Google’s hardware design here, the company’s efforts have really paid off. Prior to release, Google said it developed this design by scanning thousands of ears to develop the best possible design for the earbud itself. It definitely worked, even if it’s still not truly universal. In other reviews, some have mentioned that the “fin” behind the bud can be a little uncomfortable depending on where it sits in your ear. It doesn’t bother me, though, and I find it quite soft. There are also three included tips so you can get the best possible fit.

As a final note, Pixel Buds are IPX4 rated. They’ll hold up to some sweat and light rain, but I wouldn’t expose them to anything more than that.

Excellent touch gestures that could use some fine-tuning

Touch gestures are one of the best parts of Google’s Pixel Buds. Generally, truly wireless earbuds have some form of touch gestures for simple functions such as play/pause, skipping tracks, accessing your voice assistant, and

Here’s the thing, Google’s gestures are fantastic, but they could use a bit of work. Sensitivity is at times too much but at others too little. Constantly I found myself raising the volume while trying to pause music or vice versa. Part of this is just the nature of the buds. Since they’re smaller than the previous generation, there’s less space to recognize the gestures. More than likely, though, this is something Google can adjust with software updates.

It’d be nice too if Google enabled more customization to these gestures. As it stands now, Google’s settings are set in stone. A swipe raises or lowers volume, a tap handles play/pause (and answer call), a double tab goes to the next track (and end/reject call), and a triple-tap goes to the previous track. Finally, a press-and-hold triggers Google Assistant. It would be great if you could customize the gestures on the left and right bud individually or even assign other features. One thing that would be really cool is if a certain gesture could trigger an Assistant Routine!

Google beat everyone else’s charging case

The charging case is a hugely important part of any pair of truly wireless earbuds and it’s something Google absolutely nailed. The pebble-shaped case is compact and fairly slim. It’s a bit taller and thicker than the case for the original Apple AirPods — the gold standard for size in my opinion — but still fits in the coin pocket on my jeans.

The texture of Google’s case is also incredible. It has a matte texture that feels almost exactly like an eggshell. It’s smooth and reinforces the “pebble” idea. The texture is grippy in your pocket, but not to the point where it gets stuck. At the same time, it’s not glossy like AirPods or Galaxy Buds+, so it won’t pick up fingerprints or get easily scratched up over time! Honestly, it’s essentially perfection.

The lid of the case is also good. While the case itself is bottom-heavy because of the battery, the lid is easy to open and closes with a satisfying “thunk.” The lid sits in place well, too, even if it does have a bit of side-to-side wiggle. That’s not uncommon, though, and the Buds aren’t any worse than AirPods or others.

These are great headphones! I’m positively wowed by them and think they’re useful, versatile, comfortable and easy to use. The audio quality is outstanding and will make listening to just about anything enjoyable.

They’re also very easy to get out of the case, unlike some other slippery wireless earbuds.

If I was going to find stuff to complain about, I’d say I’m a bit surprised there’s no noise cancelling technology or no ambient mode in here. It’s becoming much more common and it’s really handy on really good headphones. For that, I guess we’ll wait for Pixel Buds 3…

Overall though whether you’re an Android phone user or not, you’re going to love the Google Pixel Buds 2. They sell for about $239CAD and you can get them from and many other electronics retailers.

New Pixel Buds Call quality

If you’re using your phone for conference calls a lot these days, you know a good pair of headphones can be a lifesaver. The Pixel Buds promise clear calls thanks to two beamforming mics.

These microphones focus on your voice, while voice accelerometers detect jaw movement to know when you’re talking and that is some futuristic shiplap! All this technology means you can be heard in noisy and windy conditions, like when you’re running or biking.

To test it I decided to grab the Old Dyson Supersonic since it wasn’t windy here…and see how I fared. Surprisingly my husband said he was able to hear me fine, though he was able to get some of that background noise. But in my opinion, if you can carry on a conversation with the hairdryer running, that’s pretty good voice focus.

The Look Station

The buds themselves are circular and finished in what appears to be the same high-quality matte plastic found on the case. The Google ‘G’ is embossed on the circular outward face and looks refined. These are without a doubt a better aesthetically designed product that than the original Pixel Buds. They’re very compact and almost disappear into the ear, which is a welcome change from some of their bulkier competitors. The colour combinations look great with each other, with the black and white playing off of each other very nicely.

The case is where things are taken to the next level. It’s fair to say that this is our favourite portable charging case. It has wonderfully refined dimensions and a sleek, modern profile which just looks good. The interior presents the pods like a piece of jewellery and adds to the overall enjoyment of owning and using the Pixel Buds 2.

Pixel Buds has plenty of Google “smarts” too

This wouldn’t be a Google product without some really cool “smart” features included.

The Pixel Buds do some of these things really well, and others, not so much.

One of those features is real-time translation. Of course, that’s pretty hard to test right now with us all in isolation, but we were able to test it. And it worked most of the time. Though one caveat there is that you do need the Google Translate app to be downloaded. But it was able to translate some French into English in real-time, which is really cool actually.

Another feature that we really enjoyed was the ability to easily pair with other devices on the same Google account. For someone like me, that reviews and uses many different smartphones, this is a huge feature. Being able to just open up the Pixel Buds 2 case and a pop up appears on the new phone to connect them, is clutch. Instead of needing to put them into pairing mode and jump into Bluetooth settings to get it done.

And of course, there is also Google Assistant. So like with many other earbuds on the market these days, Google Assistant is built into the Pixel Buds. Allowing you to have your notifications read to you, asking the Assistant for the weather and so forth. Just tap and hold your earbud to get to the Assistant. Which is super easy.

Google hit the right balance of giving us useful smart features on the Pixel Buds, without it being overkill.

Sound quality isn’t perfect, but it is good

Let’s get this out of the way, the Pixel Buds 2 are not meant for audiophiles. These are meant for those everyday users that want good sounding audio out of their headphones, but don’t need to have the very best sounding audio. And that’s why I like these.

Sure, not having an adjustable EQ does kind of suck here, but the sound is already pretty good. There’s some bass there, though it’s not boomy like Sony’s EXTRA BASS headphones, and it’s not overpowering either. Mids and highs are still pretty clear too. Overall, the quality is good. Is there room for improvement? Of course there is.

Where the Pixel Buds 2 really shine though, is with features like Adaptive Sound. This is going to adjust the volume of your Pixel Buds depending on your environment. So if you just stepped into a coffee shop, the volume will increase so you can still hear the music or audio that’s playing. It’s a subtle, but very useful feature to have.

Finally, isolation isn’t that great here. You can still hear plenty of the sounds that are around you. And if you are outside walking around, or running, this is a good thing. But some more isolation so you can immerse yourself in your music would be preferred here.
